Using a spindle sensor for Mach and VFD
« on: November 18, 2012, 10:36:55 AM »

Hi
I have a  spindle sensor setup using a QRB 1134  optical sensor. I'm installing a Delta VFD-M for my ATC. It has an option for indexing the spindle.   It has programmable digital inputs.
Is there a way to share the signal from the sensor between the VFD and Mach.

Thanks
Derek

Have a look and see if there is an output in the VFD for the revs, you may be able to configure an output to puit out a pulse every rev.

Actually I'm trying to go the other way. I need the optical sensor to signal the VFD so it can index.
It has a simple indexing function. The vfd shuts down then turns slowly till the sensor triggers. It pulls an input on the VFD low. It then turns to a programmed angle. I'm curious if I can just run the signal wire to the VFD and share it between the two
Thanks

Derek you run the risk of different voltages of the signals. Might want to consider a very small relay or electronic switch to separate the 2 signals.

Just a thought, (;-) TP

What I would try is using a Brain. as the index signal to the VFD will be at low revs then it might be ok.
Have the index signal go to Mach as normal then have a brain switch an output using the Index as a trigger, have the oput[put going to the VFD. Might not be good enough but not much hassle to try.

I have a pokeys to run the ATC if that would make things easier

I would have the index going into Mach via whatever you are using as the controller, ie parallel port or smoothstepper or.........

I'm using a parallel port. So if I run a wire from the parallel port to the input pin on the VFD are there any issues I should be aware of?
I'm worried my ignorance could be costly this time!

Thanks

I F you use the Brian approach consider an AND function with a led. That way you can turn the function on and off when needed. It keeps the brain from pulsing the output all the time.

Hood, Good call on using a brain to reroute the signal.

I would NOT wire anything direct to the LPT port I would run a GOOD BOB in between to isolate signals .  IF you mistaking input 24v into your PC/BOB it could toast it .

I would echo that, isolation is always a wise move.
