First Time Setup-Mach3-SmoothStepper Wierdness
« on: May 26, 2012, 12:31:26 PM »
I have wired up my controls for the first time but I'm having all kinds of strange issues.  I mean really strange.

Symptoms:
1) X+ JOG results in Y motor CW rotation
2) X- JOG results in Y motor CW rotation
3) Y JOG results in no movement on any motor
4) Z JOG results in no movement on any motor

Troubleshooting so far:
1) Tripple checked all wire connectors for miswire.
2) Verified no floating grounds or bad connecitons.
3) Tripple checked MACH3 Motor output configuration.
3) DIR+ for X and Z is at approx 2.5v and does not change with any JOG command.

Since the breakoutboard is not sending the correct outputs to the correct pins, the problem has to be somewhere between Mach3 and the breakoutboard.  It has to be something fundamental I am not understanding.

 ???  Please help me!

Summary:  I have MACH3 configured to send X-STEP to PORT 1 PIN 2 but it is actually comming out PORT 1 PIN 4.  I can't get X-DIR, Y-STEP, Y-DIR, Z-STEP or Z-DIR to output from any pin or port.

I would disconnect the BOB and then use a voltmeter on the Dir pin and a Gnd pin of port1 of the SS. Jog the axis one way then the other and see if the voltage changes between 5 and 0v. Do the same with the other axis Dir pins and see if they work.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Test Results:

SmoothStepper Output Tests
X-STP Pin 2: Works perfectly
X-DIR Pin 3: Works perfectly
Y-STP Pin 4: Works perfectly
Y-DIR Pin 5: Works perfectly
Z-STP Pin 6: Works perfectly
Z-DIR Pin 7: Works perfectly

So this means that the SmoothStepper is working perfectly and that the problem is now between the output of the SmoothStepper and the output of the BOB.

I suspect it will either be your BOB or slight possibility it may be the connecting cable.
