stepper motor running hot

Bought a new 4x4 cnc router and am having problems. will run 15-20 min just fine under load then the y motor gets hot and the machine starts doing wierd things like going to the wrong spot during a cut.x and y are rack and pinion.Have tried cutting slower taking less of ab bite etc. any ideas?

Check the current setting of the drive is not too high for the motor.
