MACH CAN NOT COMMUMICATE WITH SS
« on: September 04, 2011, 07:56:32 PM »
Everything was working fine. After doing some electrical upgrades (hard wire, plugs and better grounding, instead fo a bunch of extension cords)  to my machine I am getting error messages when I start mach.I did have a short with a pinched 110v to ground during the proccess.Sure hope i didn,t fry anything?
These are the different messages I get after unplugging ss and restarting mach several times. When I cut on the ss i have the red and blue leds then when i start up mach i get the green and blue.

-UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH CRYPTO MEMORY ON THE SMOOTHSTEPPER

-TIME OUT ERROR GETTING DATA

-UNABLE TO ESTABLISH COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE FPGA

-NO SS DEVICES WERE IDENTIFIED DURING USB PORT SCAN

-CALL TO PURGE FAILED IN VERYFY CRYPT MEMORY().ERRORCODE:4

thanks for any help,Tommy

Please try this:

1) Unplug everything from the SmoothStepper
2) Make sure the SS is set to be powered by the USB cable
3) Plug the USB cable in and note the LEDs which are on
4) Start Mach

If you have problems with the above try again with a new USB cable.

Please respond back with what you find.

I plugged my BOB (PMDX125) back into to the SS with the SS now being powered by the USB and it  would not communicate again  It gave error messages;

-Call to FT_Reset Device failed in my PostInit Controll()
(unable to reset USB chip with serial number SST7WS86) error code:4

-No USB devices were identified during port scan

If I unplug the BOB it seems to communicate again, red light blinking

Sounds like your BOB or ribbon cables are bad.

Jeff, thought you may be interested in my outcome. The problem was not from the short. The problem was the new 110v wireing I did, which meant everything was grounded properly.when I plugged the PC back into an extension cord with no grond prong it started working fine again.Go figure.I have read about two different ground solutions, removing two little things on the SS or cutting the sheild off the USB plug.Any thought on this?

Since I have no idea how you rewired things I can't really make a suggestion. It could be that your PC and control cabinet have different ground potentials. I have also seen many time when people say they grounded everything they literally run a ground every DC Common to earth ground, or have actual control circuits running through earth ground. Maybe you can post some photos of your control cabinet?

I will double check all grounds.I know the difference between control ground and earth ground, but I could have made a mistake. I took the shield off of a USB plug and tried that, everything work for a few seconds then froze up,with a grounded power cord.I will get back to you with better documentation. Thanks,Tommy
