THE LATHE PROJECT-2011 - THREADING WIZARD ONLY
« on: January 08, 2011, 11:21:47 PM »
This thread is strictly limited to threading wizards to be reused / combined / created ...whatever .....for a new lathe screen .
I desire not to have the threading ones mixed with other wizard updates going on.
This post will be modified to include info on the wizards and provide for discussion prior to including them into the lathe screen.

Just a quick overview of threading wizards.

There are three threading wizards for Turn as shown by the attached pics.

Actualy two since  the Complex Threading Wizard  is not really supported and Brian would like to see it
declared a myth. ;D  The complex wizard is just that, namely very complex in that it tried to provide  three pass types along with
three cut types and two infeed types  and additionly many different types of threads.I believe there are some bugs in it,
but frankly if it all worked i would probably use it. Not for a novice and unless fixed ,tested, and
documented ......... don't think it should be considered for the new lathe screen.

The G76 thread calculator is included a Mach installation.

The Simple threading wizard and Quick threads are somewhat similar with Quick threads providing more options.
The user has choice on which wizard to use via selection in the  Wizard Tab.

How should the wizards be incorporated into the new lathe screen?
- Just make them part of the wizard listing
- Make them into a sperate tab
- indvidual buttom to invoke the wizard

Should a new wizard be made which would allow you turn down a stock to dimension and then thread it?

Want to do anything to the Simple Wizard?
?- only one screen instead of two
?- incoporate the cut and infeed types into the wizard
?- can something be done to change the m1076  from within the  wizard for G76 / G32 code posting
?- need to confirm taper turning ( it has some quirks )
?- check and update the m1076 / rounding error/  not to 4 places in a line of code

Should  a picking up a thread wizard be done?

Should any changes be done to Quick threads?

SO WHAT SAY YOU LATHE USERS ?

Making the simple threading wizard on a single page would be nice. Often forget to go to the settings page. Also, the code output by the simple threading wizard does a move in machine coordinates to tool change position (not noted in the wizard) which in my mind has to be omitted. No other wizard does this and all of my programs I never use machine coordinates. Had few crashes when forgot to comment out that move.

Cannot comment on the other threading wizards as I have never used them.

I agree with Dan the G53 is not a good idea but its easy to edit the button script to either remove the G53 or remove the whole tool position line.
Maybe have a LED to choose between Machine and Offset Coords for the toolchange position as that would likely be the way to keep everyone happy. The button script could then look at the LED to either add or remove the G53.

How should the wizards be incorporated into the new lathe screen?

There's a problem.
User 1 has a simple lathe
User 2 has an auto-change turret
User 3 has a custom tool holder with several tools on it
User 4 just wants to put a thread on a rod
User 5 wants to pre- and post-machine around the thread
User 6 has an auto-feed chuck
User 7 ....

A wizard as currently done might be simplest.
But yeah, get rid of that G53 line! Frightening.

Cheers
