Variable Speed control through Mach3 For Dayton motor?
« on: September 04, 2010, 03:21:39 PM »
Hi all, I'm playing with the idea of switching motors on my Taig mill and this motor caught my eye.

Daytom Model: 2M145

http://www.drillspot.com/products/45363/Dayton_2M145_Universal_AC_DC_Motor

Now most of you know I'm not an electronics major so what would be the proper controller to control this variable speed motor through Mach 3?

Thanks for your time as always-
Dave

Dave,

I think the first thing you should do is contact Drillspot to find out more about the controller they recommend for this motor and how that is driven/controlled (pot, 0-10V etc). It might already be on their website but I can't find it.

Once the operation of the speed control has been established it should be straightforward to see the way forward for Mach control  ;)

Hi Tweaks,

The controller that actually came with the unit is the Kbmc 13BV

http://www.kb-controls.com/product.sc?productId=106

Doesn't really tell us a lot, I don't think?

I understand what you meant by looking for the 0-10 v pot as that's how I connected my treadmill motor controller to the G540 on my CNC lathe, but I know nothing about this controller.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,

Do you want Mach to control the speed of this new motor or just switch it on and off  ?

Hi Tweakie,

I already have a relay box to handle the on/off control, so that's taken care of.

I'd like to be to control the speed through Mach so that when I introduce the Gcode, it will spin up to the desired speed.

Dave,

Not much help really but, looking at the circuit for the KB speed control, it is live to the 115V so there is no way to alter it or tap into its internals without providing isolation etc. not impossible just difficult.
I think it would be better to look for an alternative which already has the 0-10V input. I will do a bit or searching and see if I can spot anything.

Tweakie, since this is considered a AC/DC Universal motor, is possible to control it with something like the minarik controller?

https://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?item=11-2269&catname=

I realize it's for 90v but wouldn't there be something out there similar to this for a 120 volt motor?

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,

I have never tried one of these but it should work.
It isolates the pot control from the live parts within the KB type controllers and operates from a computer (Mach) PWM signal.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DC-PULSE-CONVERTER-OPTOCOUPLED-SPEED-POWER-CONTROL-/200514451826?pt=UK_BOI_Industrial_Automation_Control_ET&hash=item2eaf97b972

It could be a much cheaper solution than the inverter drives I have just been looking at.
