Could a spst momentary push button switch the type commonly available at Radio Shack be used as a limit/homing switch?

Yes, But I do not know if it should be normally open or closed, you will need to find this out.
It would be best suited as a limit switch and not a homing switch. Homing switches need to be very accurate in terms of setting zero to the same point every time. I think microswitches are better for accurate homing.
