Plasma cutter for retangelar and square tube?
« on: September 28, 2009, 06:49:20 PM »
Hi,

I want to build an CNC tube cutter that has the possibility to cut round, square en rectangular tubes.

Building the machine will not be the hardest part of the project. I’m thinking of using an 4-way chuck for turning the tube (A-axis).
And for the other tree axis (X,Y and Z) I’ll make an portal.

My biggest concern is the software to run this. Is it possible to run this with Mach3?
Or has someone tried to build something like this?

I hope someone can get me in the right direction.

Michel :)

Hi Michael,

I see no reason why Mach 3 cannot control a machine to perform this task. Obviously round tube is easy but rectangular section would require a nifty bit of GCode programming if it was to be cut in one pass (rather than rotating the work, cutting one surface, rotating the work, cutting another surface etc. in steps and turning the torch on and off as required).
