Safe Z

I have been trying to use the Alt Z keyboard command to go to safe Z and not had any luck.  I have checked the use safe Z box, and told Mach to use Machine coordinates but z axis doesn't move.  What other setup step have I missed?  Thanks

Where do you get the info that Alt Z will do a safe Z move? Do you have a screen button that will move to Safe Z?
