Galil / Re: Mach3 and Galil ... Getting better
« on: May 01, 2008, 05:50:20 PM »
You can get in touch with me at 978 683 3256 or e-mail me at the address in my profile. I have Galil running OK. Can probably help You out too. I'm in Massachusetts. Where are You located?

Scott,
Just found this. http://www.jrkerr.com/picsrvsc.pdf  It takes step and direction input (from Mach3) and generates pwm output for Your amps. I still need to see the ProtoTrak connection drawings to be sure that this is correct for Your amps, But as it takes normal step and direction inputs, You can use it from Mach3.

Scott,
Yes, I am familiar with the Prototrak system. You'll need a controller like the Pico to hook to Your existing drives. I need to confirm the connections with one of my customer's machines. I will try to do that tomorrow. If I am successful, I will try and give You connections to the Pico. The Pico was developed for the EMC software which is very similar to Mach3. I have been following this thread, but want to be sure before leading You off in a direction. You would be using the Pico instead of the SmoothStepper, unless of course, they implement some type of PWM output. You should probably contact them and ask about that directly. If so, please forward their response to me and I'll have a go at the connections for You.

I'm back!
Check here, they may be able to help.   http://pico-systems.com/pwmbox.html

Need to jump in here.
Your drives/amps are located in the motor housings. Input to the drives is definitely pwm and not step/direction. feedback is through the separate encoder signals.
You'll need a driver that interfaces with Mach and generates PWM output to the servo drives. I am not sure who makes one, but I will look and report back here.
You can NOT use step and direction to run these drives.
Sorry for the bad news, But I'll keep looking for a solution.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Needed, Good wireing diagram program

Brett,
Check out the schematic program from ExpressPCB.com It's intended for drawing PCB schematics to create wire run lists, but its free and has extensive libraries of components and also You get the ability to dreate Your own component types. Great for creating ckt bd's too. and You can't beat free!

General Mach Discussion / Re: resolver to digital
« on: April 01, 2008, 10:19:59 PM »
asparaguy,

I use the a+ & b+ inputs to the Galil. If You have a noisy (electrically) signal, then the complementary outputs will help considerably. On the Galil I wire the encoders to the main encoder and in the Galil plug-in configuration under "motor config" I make sure that both boxes are unchecked. That allows my encoder signals to feed directly back to Mach DRO's.
Please note, there are some areas where the Galil needs additional work in order to be fully functional under Mach. Several people are actively working to improve the plugin to round out those remaining features, so that we can all use Mach fully. Mach and Galil rock!

Your signals sound like complementary quadrature. The Galil controller will accept that. Galil does not natively accept resolver signals. A search of their web site comes up with several hardware options for resolver input, but I don't think that You will need them. The giveaway is the marker pulse or +-I. a resolver wouldn't have that.

Scott,
Glad to see that You are calming down. It is obvious to all here that You are the brains behind that project. There are always people trying to gain advantage through the efforts of others. Good luck on future projects!

General Mach Discussion / Re: Mach3 using Galil servo card
« on: March 20, 2008, 07:04:45 PM »
At present, the Galil plugin doesn't support probing. I need it too and am trying to get it working. The Galil plug-in is still in its infancy and needs some work to implement features that the stepper guys currently enjoy. But, the Galil controller is my way of choice.
