General Mach Discussion / Re: New Taig Mill need help

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention are the "soft limits".  Set them up and they will keep you from running against the ends of travel.  Perhaps not as fail safe as actual switches, but certainly worth setting up.

Chuck

Hello Astro Guy,

Nice looking setup.  I've been getting up and running with a CNC Taig also, but I've spent some time on a manual mill which has helped me.

I'd say "home" would be a location where the spindle axis is near the left front corner of the table (assuming you are facing the table), with the Z axis several inches (For a Taig, 6 to 7) above the table.  However unless you have homing or limit switches installed, you cannot really home the machine anyway.  You could set "machine zero" at these locations though.

The other, and very important,  zero point is the workpiece zero and this depends on the part you are making.  If your part blank is rectangular, you might set workpiece zero at the left front corner of the workpiece.  Workpiece zero in the Z direction will probably be the top surface of your workpiece.  If the part was circular,   X and Y zero would probably be on the centerline.

Have you read Section 7, Coordinate Systems, Tool Tables, and Fixtures in the "Using Mach3 Mill" manual?   There is also some information on touching off to determine your workpiece zeros in Section 7.

Another good resource is the Yahoo Taig group and also Peter Smid's CNC Programming Handbook has some good information.

I hope this helps a little.  Keep reading and asking questions.

What sort of parts or objects will you be making on the Taig?

Good luck.

Regards,

Chuck

Hello Scott,

Thanks for the recommendation on Homecnccontrol's MPG.  I saw this MPG at Galesburg last May and it did look nice.   Is Peter the fellow who operates Homecnccontrols?

Chuck

Has anyone in the group had any experience with Homecnccontrol's Jog-Dial?  Any comments?  It does look like a nice product.

Thanks,

Chuck

General Mach Discussion / Re: Machine Zero Resetting

Hello Chaoticone,

Thanks for the tip.  I didn't have persistent DROs selected.  Now machine zero stays the same when I power down and come back up.  Also, I now know an easy way to move machine zero.

I am new to CNC and learning a lot.  I have a Taig mill with steppers on  X and Y.  I will add the Z stepper as soon as I get comfortable moving the table around.

I am running Mach3, version R1.84.001, Bob Campbell's Mach3 Enclosure, and Bob's SoundlogicM3.xml  file.  I don't have limit or home switches on the mill yet.

No problem running several simple G Code files, but I found that my machine zeros were changing.  I finally figured out that if I move the table to some location away from X and Y zero, close Mach3, and restart Mach3, machine zero is then at the last spindle location before shutting Mach down.  From listening to Art's Homing and Limits video several times, I thought that machine zero could only be changed by referencing the machine to the home switches and of course, I don't have home switches yet.  Any suggestions.  I may have something set wrong or be doing something wrong.  I am not sure I've given enough information, so please let me know if some other detail is needed.

Thanks,

Chuck
