Looking great.  How would it work if you had 2 lasers at opposing angles to each other and the camera in the middle?  Would you get a better part definition?

Greg:

For meshing, Im using MachCloud, which now does meshing, and stl file saving, just trying to make it work reliably now..

:)

Now, is that what you are working on for scanning and plugs into MACH?

Art,

I was just thinking about how to keep it all away from the dirt and dust that might be around the CNC machine.  I've looked at David and if your plug-in will do the same thing, no need to do the David thing.  What are you using for the mesh CAM software?

Greg

p.s.  As always, thanks for your speedy reply.  You're the MAN!!!

Hi Art,

I like what you are doing, BUT (don't you just love that word, BUT?)  how about setting up the scanner so that it's not connect to a CNC machine, so the scanning can be done in another room or office and then transfered to the MACH machine?  Fully automated and scanning in a vertical plane rather than a horizontal.  A single axis or 2 axis (for rotation) would be great!  Also, what do you think about using 2 lasers at say 45* angles of each other to get more detail?

Just some thoughts I had.

Greg

Does it really matter in which axis the camera and the laser are installed as long as the movement and capture are in the correct direction?  You could mount the laser and camera on the vertical with the line being on the horizontal.  I see why Art did it this way, he took advantage of his CNC machine and it's ability to move in precise steps.

I got mine too.   I didn't measure my line, but 1/64 of an inch is smaller then my laser's line.  I'll measure it tonight.  Maybe I'll get the camera and laser mounts made tonight too.

Just turn the base until you get the thinnest line possible.  The one I got does focus and can get as wide a 1/4"  It is just too cool.  Heck I have to get my machine built before I can mount anything.  :)

Well, I got mine last night.  At about 12 inches above a surface I can focus the line width down to about 1/64th of an inch.  Now, at what rate of speed is the camera and laser moving across a surface for the scan?

Hi Art,

You know I was just teasing you.  I know how you are with a product and MACH3 is a fine example of how you turn out software.  I don't think you'll ever have it completely done as you'll always be tweaking on something in the code.   ;D  And when someone asks about something to be added of tweaked you'll be there to see if it can be done.  I can't wait for the laser to show up so I can try it out and play with it too.

I was wondering, when you did the scan of your hand did you just job the "Y" axis manually?  At what rate of speed?  I was thinking about putting the camera and the laser on a device like an axis and then turn everything on and have the camera move slowly down the object or across the object and when it hit the limit switch, shut off and the scanned object would be captured to the PC ready for doing to it whatever needs to be done.  I thought about this when I first saw the David system.

Keep up the great work!!

Greg
