Monte, Another two cents worth.  I am running basically the same setup you have (different controller though).  Watched your utube demo and the miss sounds more mechanical to me (but it could just be my ears - selective hearing and all that).  My Taig runs very true, excellent repeatability, etc.  I was having a problem before that turned out to be misadjusted gibs (too tight).  I would lose steps while cutting circles and get ovals.  The bind would generally rear its head when cutting arcs.  Once I adjusted the gibs it wasn't a problem any longer.  Just something else to check.  One more item - how about the couplings between the motors and your screws?  Some slop there would definitely cause problems.

If you Like, I can send you copies of my configs, motor tunings, etc.

Good luck.  Taigs are great, but can be a little (lot!!) frustrating at times.   But, the good pieces I have made have compensated for all the headaches.  If you haven't already done so, look up Nick Carter's Taig site.  There is a lot of information regarding tuning Taigs that I have found really helpful.

Bob@BobsShop-  Time to go cut some more.

General Mach Discussion / Version 2.63 vs: 3.00 vs:3.037
« on: February 27, 2008, 10:40:20 PM »
??? Has version 2.63 become the defacto "final version," of Mach3?  In the past I have stayed on top of developments and upgraded regularly in order to have the lastest and greatest - and have a version that corrected previous "bugs."  Now, I note that the 2.63 is the "Release Lockdown," version.  I have been using 3.00 without any problems (yet!) and am reluctant to regress to 2.63.  At the same time, I have not upgraded to the latest development version until it becomes a final release version.

Just curious.

G-Code, CAD, and CAM discussions / Re: Open a DXF in AC Lt.

RC - You can find CADX11 at http://www.graytechsoftware.com/.  It is a little quirky with little or no documentation, but the DXF file it produces - reproduce in LCAM very well.  CADX11 is free and does not have a time limit.   You do have to request a password, but Graytech (the company) never has sent me an e-mail or to my knowledge ever given out my e-mail address.

What I like about CADX!! is, I can import some TEXT files from DeskEngrave (another free-be - did I say I am cheap?) that can be manipulated to produce cuttable (good word!!) text in some of my creations.  I have been using AutoCad LT 2008 (just startedf recently) and like the features, but have not been successful in reproducing good text images that can be used in LCAm.  If you want to shoot me a private message, I can send you some samples of the DXF files I have used.

Good luck - I am a 68 year old newby when it comes to CAD, CNC, or mill/lathe work.  But, with a lot of perseverance, I have produced some really nice pieces for my Harley.

The short answer is - yes you can (open a DXF in AC lt - at least I can in 2008).  Just use the OPEN function and go the file containing your DXF.  But, I have actually found it easier to IMPORT dxfs into CADX (free cad program - no limits, no spam, etc) and work with them in there.

What are you trying to accomplish with your DXF?

Hi, Gimble88.

Interesting - I used your inputs and got the same results.   Did some additional tinkering (never could leave anything alone!)  Editing the G-code and eliminating the reference to G41 altogether cleaned up the final result.  Of course, this also did away with the lead in and you may want that.  I then changed the PO to .0625 (1/2 of .125 - the size of your cutter).   By changing the position-offset (PO) to .0625 you get a nice leadin and no garbage.  This will not correct the view you get in the "Verify Tool Path," screen, but it should produce workable code for the finished product.

The Wizard appears to have a bug in it and Ron and/or ART will need to address that.

Gim, I have had similar (but not exactly the same) things happen when I have partially ran code and stopped before an M30 code was read.  Seems that running code without the terminating M30 being activated leaves commands that may interfere with a new program.  Not sure if that is what is happening to you, but it is something you may want to consider.

Seems I remember reading recently that version 3.0 had produced some problems - I don't recall the particulars of that post.   Version 3.0 was removed from the download choice and replaced by 2.63.  That said, I am still using 3.0 and have not experienced any problems - YET!!

What are the particulars that you are inputting into the Wizard?

Mikie:

Don't know what type of mill you are running, but I had similar problems (not always at the same place and not all the time).  In my case I was running a small table-top mill (Taig) and my gibs had gotten too tight.  Depending on the cut, the table would bind up.  It happened most often when I was cutting an arc and the table was moving in two directions at the same time.  Adjusting the gibs solved the problem.  Sounds like it was easy, but it took me forever to figure out what was happening!

Similarly, my circles were not consistent.  Same problem and fix.

Good Luck

Chip - I have been using Mach for over a year and was never aware of the "RAT," function. ???  Amazing!!!  Although I really like Mach and have been able to generate some really great (imho) parts, the documentation is - at times - somewhat lacking.  I know this is a symptom of the software evolving so fast, but it can be be somewhat frustrating.

Two questions - One, is the "RAT," attribute documented anywhere?  Like I said, I was not aware of it.

Second question - Is there a way to control the speed of the "RAT"?  When I click on the "S," my "RAT," runs so fast it is either going to kill itself or burn up the screen. ;)

In spite of occasional glitches, I want to thank everyone involved with the development of Mach and members of this forum for their help.  It has been quite a journey!

Bob @ BobsShosp - going back to watching the "RAT" and generating products looking for a purpose!

Brian - can you explain this procedure for those not fortunate enough to live in Maine?  I had a similar circumstance recently and hit "STOP," when I punched the "Cycle Start", button my machine tried to move to a new position, broke an end mill, and ruined the piece I was working on.  Next time I (there is always a next time), I will try to remember to hit "Feed Hold," stead.  But if there is a more fool-proof method I would like to know.

Jerry there is a way to restart a file... Where is Maine are you? I am in Carmel and if you are close I will show you a trick on how to pick up a file.... I did this on a file that I was running with Gary B at the workshop last year and it worked great !

Thanks

Very nice work!  Does the probe react to non-conductive objects?  Or, just metal.
