Thanks for the info, Hood. For some reason I had thought that this was very basic and existed. After I didn't find it in your OEM codes list, I found the above reply by Art.

Using extensively the MDI with different offsets for same tool makes it difficult to track the offsets. And like it has been noted above, setting the tool table becomes tricky when not knowing the current offset.

Any news on this? Does anybody know if there is such a DRO available to add to my lathe screen?

Hi Klaus,

Thank you very much for a great Mach screen editing software! Have never had the courage to design a screen using Screen4. MachScreen looks very simple and friendly.

Hi Spitter,

You are correct on all your statements. And the thermal expansion of aluminium is greater than that of steel - seems I messed things up above ;) thanks for pointing that.

Wow! Kilowatts huh... Thought it would be easier to cut thin foils. But no question about the reflecting qualities of metals at these wave lengths.

Have fun playing with this little toy ;) it's nice to follow this thread and see what else you come up with.

Hi Tweakie,

Thanks for the photo. The striations are noticeable, but not as bad as I had thought. I am sure better results will come with experience.

Have you tried the laser at some metal foil yet?

G-Code, CAD, and CAM discussions / Re: Tapered Pocket

Larry,

Using a ball (or bull) nose end mill will get you as close to a smooth wall as is possible by CNC milling. To get a real smooth wall you then have to sand it. Also, depending on the taper angle there are tapered end mills available for small angles, but these are usually very expensive.
