Not via the parallel port but it can with some external controllers.

CSMIO being one of them?

Hood,

And how it's done in their example with the Delta drive? Seems they're feeding the 5V signal directly to the controller? Don't think the drive outputs 24V for the encoder signals.

To many "wants"  and not enough cash to go round. I think everybody here can relate to that.

Absolutely!

Hood,

Seems your standard for "not much done" differs a lot from mine ;)

Why are you going to replace the spindle motor? In favour of a servo one? An interesting thing I recently discovered that VMC's usually have a plain 3 phase induction motor for spindle. I didn't know that since they all do rigid tapping and was expecting them to have servo spindle for that. Appears their sophisticated VFDs take care of this.

Looks very good. Like the the simplicity and the screen being clear and not cluttered.

Very well made, Sam! Shows you did a good work on your home made machine... now you have no excuses for starting up with a new one and not finishing the parts ;D

Yes, I find the document a bit confusing. They are saying "line driver" and "open collector" output in the same line. I think they were meaning something else. The output spec they provide on the next line is a misleading again - why would they provide the drive's output spec? Would rather expect the CSMIO input spec instead (if anything).

Anyway, I believe it shouldn't matter if the output is open collector as it's only a matter of a pull-up resistor.

Hood,

What do you mean when you say the outputs are line driver? Could you not just use the Z (omitting the Z-)?

This is interesting! However, I am not sure that reducing the encoder PPR to widen the index pulse would be practical in all cases.

Terry, yes, that would be the root radius. Sorry for the confusion, but always had the hexagon in mind while doing this and assumed it was obvious. I will have to give it a bit more thought to make it multipass. Don't want it to cut air at any point.

Russ, I agree, squares may not be practical, but I believe hexagons and above should be doable in metals provided the rake angle is correct. We shall see this. Now I really think eccentrics should be next... what do you say, Terry?

Hmm... didn't notice the metal hex sneaked in - obviously they have some better ways to make hex shapes out there... ;D
