Thanks, followed your advice and figured it out, apparently I missed the reboot after  cloning of the configuration at start up  for the first time neccesary to update firmware in SMooth STepper. Followed the instruction verbatim and its back up and running

so I have installed the latest version of mach, latest plugin and smooth stepper and verified all my settings with no communication. What might I be missing?

I did install the smooth stepper driver and the plug in

General Mach Discussion / Help getting running after hard drive swap
« on: March 25, 2016, 09:19:22 PM »
Hi, apologies if this is in the wrong place, please move if necessary.

I have been using Mach3 on my lathe for the past 5 or 6 years with no problems at all. I have been using smooth stepper and havent made any changes in years and honestly havent kept up with any updates etc as the lathe has run perfectly.

A couple of days ago we had a brown out do to a loose connection in our service panel. The hard drive was damaged, I was able to make copies of most everything on the hard drive using puppy linux.

Installed a new hard drive, same computer no other changes. I loaded Mach3 again, same version/build, dropped in my license, plugged in the smooth stepper, directed windows to the folder with the exact same driver that was working properly.  Found my latest smooth stepper xml backup (from last month) and placed it in the mach3 directory.

I launch Mach3 loader and chose Smooth Stepper, Mach3 launches with wrong kernel speed message, seems to be set at 25k, Change it back to 45k and thats about where my notes end.

When I look at ports and pins, general config and motor tuning everything looks correct but I am unable to jog or turn on spindle.

I know these is quite a reach but could someone guide me in the right direction to get back up and running, I am sure there are a few port settings or something in smooth stepper setup I have missed since it seems like a comm problem.

Thanks RIchard

Just ran rkill then malwarebytes and found something on the machine and pen drive called Conficker . Cleaned the machine and all seems to be well.  Thanks for looking it over and the advice on switch wiring issues.

I checked the incremental and its off.  I did plug a usb drive in the machine that I dont normaly use this morning and I am wondering if there is a possibilty a virus of some sort might have corrupted something. This is the only thing out of the norm thats happened . The machine isnt on the network and has no access to the internet, email etc.

I just finished wiring the estop to also cause servo and spindle drives to enter estop when button is pushed insead of relying on software alone. One of those things I have just (foolishly) put off   Good point on the NO switch for estop, I will surely address this today before using the machine any further, had never thought of the loose connection possibility. The limits are deeply buried in the machine and might be a bit more of a project to change. Need to find a small person to climb thru the opening in the top of the machine to reach them

I mentioned earlier that the machine continues to travel after the jog button is released. I decided to back it off the chuck 20+ inches and see how far it will travel. it seems it travels for exactly 4 inches each time the button is pressed. Is there a jog distance/increment preset somewhere that I might have unknowingly changed?

The tool length offset isnt to big a deal as I can go back and manualy edit the other 11 tools in the library after setting a new TLO

Not sure whats causing it but now when I set the offset for a paticular tool its shifting all the other tools in the library by exactly 5" . This and the jogging issue are the most random glitches I have encountered

Here is the XML for both the turn and smooth stepper  , seems like its been well over a year since I have made any changes other than running the spindle calibration and updating the tool table

Its disturbing to me also. When I press the jog button (arrow key) the machine travels in the correct direction but just doesnt stop when the button is released and no other buttons on the keyboard have any effect until I use the mouse to click the stop button on screen. It also disables all the external inputs , estop etc.  Once I click stop on screen the external inputs seem to work fine as do the other keyboard functions, s= spindle etc.

Considering the wieght of my crosslide and tool changer  and the speeds this machine will travel its down right scary not having an estop.

What has me confused is this machine has run fine for ages, and not s single thing has changed, been using the blue lathe screen set since the begining. I do notice that all the z offsets for every tool in the library have changed to odd random numbers also . I will load my XML in a few minutes . Thanks
