General Mach Discussion / Re: Lathe Turn wizard question
« on: January 22, 2008, 01:24:03 AM »
I know what you're saying. You are sort of pushing the edge for this wizard, this is really a reentrant cycle you need here. At the risk of being repetitive about this issue, I have been asking for a wizard that works like the G71 lathe roughing cycle a Fanuc has. It will rough to an arbitrary shape, which could easily be a DXF profile, etc. or a section of G code that is called out after the wizard. For a true reentrant shape you would need the G73 cycle which just moves the cut path in the X axis only. You might try getting hold of a CAM program, usually expensive, and even the high end ones are very lame with lathe uses, amazingly enough as a lathe is only a 2D machine. I guess even the CAM companies don't bother too much with lathe as about all machines have some version of a G71, sadly with Mach, you don't.

Oh, I have a good 20mm round program for a Lahti, maybe Solothurn but it uses the G73 cycle. Sigh.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Mach Turn 1.84.001

Back from a test, so I am on this again. I use the Machblue screenset, and on the manual page where I reference the machine from, it has the three coordinate buttons, Program coordinates, Machine coordinates and Part coordinates. The first two, program and machine, show the exact same thing, both have the same value in them. The third one, Part coordinates, is the value Mach uses for it's softlimits, and I seem to be unable to alter in any way. The X axis Homing/ limits are set at softmax -0.100", softmin at -7.00" on the part coordinate DRO. This seem odd to you?

Yeah, I thought the same thing too, but I tried it both ways and it didn't seem to matter. I'll have another hack at that tomorrow and see if I can get somewhere maybe. Other than that I'm sorta stumped. I see that there are a few others recently that are having similar problems too, makes you wonder a bit.

The ticker tape message says "Software limits", there are no limits lights lit on the diagnostics page. Homing/ limits are set at softmax -0.100", softmin at -7.00". I had tried messing with the max limit to fix this but nothing seemed to work. The logic page, debounce setting for inputs is set at 3000, I haven't tried changing this lately. Thanks Hood.

Home and limit is the same switch on the X axis. It homes off as it should, but then throws the Estop after that. I tried playing with the limits settings, thought that if the measured limits were too close to the switch position it might screw it up but nothing there helped.

When referencing, the X axis causes the Estop to come on. I then have to open the limits flyout screen and turn off soft limits. Then reset the Estop. I then jog the X axis away from the switch, then turn the soft limits on again, and this fixes it. I don't have this problem with the Z axis for some reason, but the Z axis is a reference switch in the middle of the travel, so I always thought that that had something to do with it. I have had two different types of limits switches on the X axis, changed just for an accuracy reason, but the same thing has happened to both. Both the X and the Z axis limit switch wiring run in similar paths so I have reason to believe it's not an interference issue, and I never get false limit alarms.

Well, over a year ago 1.84 was a recommended version for turn, and I have lived with this limits problem since then, it's ok once you know how to get around it, but still a pain if you haven't fired the thing up in awhile to remember how to do. I will go back to the shop and have another look, I was looking where you guys said to look, config, logic, left lower corner, but it has debounce settings for spindle encoder, and another one I don't remember right now. The other one is set to 3000, I do remember that, but it said nothing on it about being for limits. Thanks,

General Mach Discussion / Mach Turn 1.84.001

Hello, I have been using the release 1.84.001 for turn, this was a good release awhile back, but wondering now if there is a newer, better version out, or if the turn version has even changed at all. I was looking for a debounce setting for the limits as I have had an ongoing pain with referencing but see that 1.84 has no debounce setting for limits.

Well, we still don't know what torque your motors are, other than that you can't turn them with your fingers, which isn't saying anything, and that we don't know what voltage you are feeding these motors with. in Jim's words, "Fred - You have said a lot, but nothing." Write back when you know both of these major details.

You say "Disc stepper motors", if the torque isn't known, I am trying to imagine what these look like, and I don't think they are very powerful for what I know of them. Are they NEMA sized, or, what length are they?
