General Mach Discussion / Setting up a 4th axis?
« on: July 05, 2008, 02:09:59 PM »
Now bear with me since I'm not a very knowledgable person in this area-  :P

Ok, so I'm interested in setting up a 4th axis (horizontal) on my Taig Mill and I have my stepper and wiring all figured out, BUT, the machanical part of it eludes me a bit. Do I need a gear reducer of somekind? How come you can't just connect a 3 jaw chuck or a drill chuck to the motor shaft itself? Is the resolution too high and you need to lower it by reducing it in some way? I've seen many things used from a small rotary table to a small gearbox/reducer. How do I know what's right for me?

The range of diameters that I would use is probably between 1/4" to 2".

Please help me set this up if you can?

As always, thank you for your invaluable time!  ;)

FAQs / Re: Laptop requirements with Mach 3

Actually it works for my Dell D600, wonder what's different about our setups?

Glad to hear you got it sorted out. I learned this through the Mach 3 optimization document.

Jim, possibly you're having a Adobe (or whatever PDF file program you have) issue?

The file downloads fine.

Wow, a 450 feedrate? Do you by anychance have any video? I'd love to see that in action!

Thanks again for the details!

Rc answered the 3D question and I think I can answer a few more for you.

The pan function is accomplished by holding down the "CTRL" key and moving the mouse.

The zoom function is accomplished by holding down the "SHIFT" key and moving the mouse.

There's also a function that you can see the toolpath run but there's no speed control for it unfortunatley. Just push the "S" key and rotate the drawing and watch that little cutter (tornado? lol!!) run!

As for NCplot, I don't know anything about that so I can't really help there, sorry-

Drill select circles is for when you import a dxf and there are holes to be drilled and you'd rather not interpolate them with an endmill, you can click on the hole that you'd like to drill and then push the drill select holes button and it will turn it into a point and then drill it for you at the depth you choose.

Just killer, my friend. Now seeing the detail, what size and shape of cutter/s did you use? Are you doing any toolchanges?

Just beautiful-  :)

I actually had a thought, here's the dxf since you'll probably want to run it differently than me anyhow:

EDIT:

I noticed I had the dxf for this table in only half scale, sorry about that.  :-[

I have since uploaded the correct 11" X 4" size.

I haven't done the CAM work on it as of yet, but when I do, I'll be happy to!
