Hi Brian,
I found some good deals on chinese ac servos, they are very similar to the ones automation direct offers, but their software is in chinese, is there need for the software to get the automation direct servos running with mach 3? or is it just a monitoring software?

I'm not sure the hobycnc board will be able to take 60V, check with them.

Try running a gcode program, or an mdi line

something like:
F20 (or some other number you think you should be able to get it to run at)
G01 x10

and see how that behaves
Another thing might be the voltage you are running the board and motors at

try lazycam, it comes bundeled with mach 3, look for it on the mach3 folder, there is a video about lazycam on the tutorials section on this website
hope that would get you started

Actually "steps per" means steps per unit, if you are calibrating in inches, then you need 5 complete motor turns (assuming direct dive), if you were not using microsteping this would translate into 200steps*5turns=1000 steps per inch, since you are using 4 microsteps per step, then that would yield 4000 steps per inch.
Same thing with the 16 tpi screw, 200*16*4=12800 steps per inch on that axis.
Hope that helps

Art,
Have you ever thought of making Mach3 have PLC capabilities, or make a stand alone software capable of doing this?
I have yet to see a decent software based PLC controller.
Best Regards

Cant you just hook up the output of your breakout board to the + terminal, and connect the - terminal to ground?
Dont know if that would work though
