sorry about your overtemp problem. It should be fairly easy to include a temperature trip in the E Stop line. There are a whole range of Bi-metallic switches available in both normally closed & normally open. They have operating points of 50 deg C to 160. An example is Farnell code 178-801 which opens at 80 deg C & closes again at 55.

Tony,

try using a meter to check the resistance between the 3 wires. Many small units are of the resistive type and are effectively A,B & common and act as switches. To use them ground the common & use the other 2 as A & B, assuming there are pull-up resistors on the inputs.

thanks for the reply. That would be a nice Christmas present.

L Cam seemed to clean up the profile very well and there is no problem visible until the code is posted. I may not have understood something in the setting up, but I think I found most of the points. As I said, removing the groove, gets rid of the spurious move.

ah! Thanks for that. I didn't know that there was a difference in capacity. I thought that they'd usedthe same basic mechanics with updated control layout & electronics. ( or was that just the 160 )

I just tried a quick scaling exercise and it looks as though using the centre height for the scaling is incorrect. I can't get the same scale factor for the centre height & the stepper size. Looking at my turret1 pic I notice that the tool tips do not appear to lie on a line through the axis of the turret. Scaling from just the stepper gives me an axis height of 45mm above the cross slide & a possible toolplate dia of about 140 -160 mm. Does this sound about right?

Regarding the idea of using a rotary table, I think it would work well, but for a small lathe like the TCL it may be difficult to find one with a small enough centre distance. I've been thinking about the same sort of thing myself, but I'm sort of becoming resigned to having to make one from scratch.

Thanks for that, Ian. I imagine the stepper is a size 23, so I can probable scale the picture from that.  If the outside pair of holes in the feet of the casting that was used for fixing then they are 50mm apart. Also the centre height will be 35mm. Its certainly quite a substantial ratchet. Presumably you haven't a similar picture of the other side?

I think there is probably a lot of interest in the group in toolchangers generally, and it might be worth trying to collect any available information together in one place. Not sure how we do that.

Just a cautionary note. Some older ports may not be fully capable of switching to inputs. I have been designing a new breakout board, which will use LPT2 as mainly inputs, and found that the built-in port (which had been LPT1) could be made to take inputs, but the output drivers were not disabled. This caused a current of about 40ma to flow through any switch attached to the input. Not a problem for switches but a problem for the port itself. It was also not really practical to drive them with logic. In the end I've had to specify that it must be used with  a modern ECP/EPP card.
There is some good info on the web on parallel ports which describes the different cicuits used and problems associated with them. Can't point to it at the moment, but I think I just did a search for parallel port interfacing.

I've just started playing with Lazycam and, as I have a lathe, I've had to fumble my way through the (apparently as yet undocumented) controls & options.
I've managed to create G code and even cut a couple of parts from DXFs. I have, however, managed to draw a simple part which seems to cause problems. It's just an excercise so it doesn't really matter, but it's not a 'difficult' part either.

The code looks ok & runs, but part way into the roughing it goes off & follows the finished profile.

The problem is caused by the groove at the left hand side. If I remove it everything is ok. I chamfered it to make it easier, but there's no difference.

Can someone try this and see if it's just something I haven't discovered yet?
