General Mach Discussion / Galil plugin question
« on: January 09, 2007, 03:00:15 PM »
I have a manual Hardinge lathe I am retrofitting to CNC and I was wondering if the Galil plug-in would be a better option than the GRex. I intend on using some Yaskawa Servos/Drives I have. To use these with the GRex I would need to use a converter to go from step/dir to analogue. Could the Galil interface directly with them? I haven't seen detailed specs on the galil so I am not too sure of the inputs/outputs it accepts. Does it support analogue and MPG inputs? If not, I guess I could use a ModIO board for these.

If your Z axis tubes are still open you could add some dampers inside. You need 4 smaller tubes wrapped in something like scotchdamp then space them out so there is about 1/8" to 1/2" space all around them. You then fill the space with some form of grout. I think Philadelphia resins has special stuff just for this purpose. It shouldn't add too much more weight and should cut down resonance a lot. The is more info on the MIT website about this if you are interested.

Where did you get the connectors to make your IO cables?

Brian, how smooth are the servos at really slow speeds? Do they exhibit any cogging? The fast stuff is really cool but most of the time my lathe will be running pretty slow during cutting.

I am thinking of using a Grex and the automation direct drives on a hardinge lathe I am converting. Are the servos on your mill direct drive or do you use a gear reduction?
