Show"N"Tell ( Your Machines) / Re: Yet another Retrofit. Hardinge HXL-S
« on: December 30, 2006, 06:33:39 PM »
Thanks for the comments.   Not much to update this thread about, but I hope to change that in the next few weeks.

It's just my other retrofit (see the Leadwell thread) has been busy in production and I have had no spare time at all to get back onto the Hardinge.

Your's is a HXL? So the Mark Centry control version?   the -S in HXL-S was the Siemens control version, slightly update with larger enclosures etc.

I really wanted a 16C CHNC but ended up with this!

I have another Hardinge too, a 5C HCT which was retrofitted from NEW in 1969 with a plugboard control.  I retrofitted it again about 7 years ago with Ahha software.

If you set up to run over modbus you can do it :)

Yes I know about that archaic Modbus Protocol ;)   Maybe I'll go that route unless something better comes along.

It's just I have a simple PIC based I/O controller that costs next to nothing to make (<$10) , has as much I/O as you could wish for and can be programmed in Basic.

Is there any reason in particular that RS232 Rx is not supported?

LOL, thats just my sense of humour slipping out!   But it has had 70 odd views in less than 24hrs.  Probably very few Mach users :(

I'm running the over side of the job now, won't bother doing a vid though, maybe the next job.

Be much nicer if these vids could be embedded in the messages here.  I did produce a SWF version but it cam to over 200Mb which I felt far too large for such a little vid.  In AVI form on YouTube it's about 100Mb.  But I can get it down to much less but not suitable for direct viewing here.

Brian

Thats a real shame..   I could be able to do so much more with my homebrew PLC if I could pass verbose messages back to Mach.

I guess I'll have to continue using an input for Acknowlage which has it's drawbacks.

Any of the Mach VB guru's know if Mach can now recieve data on the rs232 port?

I know it's possible to send with SendSerial command, but did Rx ever get implemented?

A quick and dirty vid from the job above.

Hosted on YouTube to save a bit of bandwidth here.

Benny, any way to embed these?

Graham...

The index and ATC is all sorted.  I went with my original idea of using some of the original gear on the spindle and my own PLC.

The index shown above is for the the carousel only, the original control never used one, but probably used a paremeter in the control and some non volatile memory to store the last carousel position.

Oneday I'll get ome pics up here of the setup.  I may even post up my <$10 PLC design ;)  at the moment I'm just too overwhelmed with work.

Not much going on with the retrofits, but it's the day after Christmas and I'm working again:(

Treated myself to  couple of cheap 4" vices so this job can be run in less time.

100 done this afternoon, only another 260 to go Arrrgh..... and this is only the 1st side..

Re your spindle drive.   Does your machine have the split cone pullys and the small motor and leadscrew to infinately change ratio?

My 1st retrofit had this arrangement, and I kept it while using a VFD.   I rearranged it so that it effectively became a LOW/HIGH gearbox moving from one limit dwitch to the other.

Worked quite well.   I'd take pic, but the machine is in pieces again while I modify the pan to give me a deeper well like my HXL-S
