i have been trying to figure out what i thought would be a simple fix.
my cnc router uses a dedicated pc with mach 3 and no online connection. the machine control rig uses an ESS and Gecko drives for the nema 34 steppers. machine has run almost flawlessly for years. ran a job last wednesday and shut down mach(pc) as normal, the next day upon start up and jogging machine, the y-axis and slave were reversing directions at random and erratic behavior...x and z jogged normally. motors checked out and all wiring connections from motors back to geckos too.
the ESS has no yellow light coming on. this light is supposed to come on at power up and stay on always, as it does on my other machine with ESS. i was told by a very reliable source that it could be either a faulty ESS or perhaps a corrupted xml file. i am trying to fix the issue with a very limited amount of experience. has anyone else ever had this issue? thank you in advance, Dan

this cnc router worked fine yesterday. today when starting up i could not jog the machine to the homing position because the y-axis stepper motors were randomly moving in the wrong direction. i disengaged both motors/pinions from the rack and observed the same. acting erratic and randomly rotating in the wrong direction.
i am using Mach 3 with ESS. i read that the little yellow light next to the ethernet cable input should be on. it is not coming on. the green light near ethernet is blinking as it should but no yellow light. any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you, dan

General Mach Discussion / cnc controller blowing fuses...please help.
« on: July 05, 2022, 12:09:49 PM »
I have a CNC Router Parts Nema 23 control w/ESS.  this system uses a toroidal transformer, 2 x 115vac primary with 28v Ac 8amp and 8v Ac 2amp secondary's. when i power up the machine the 2amp fuse after the transformer and bridge rectifier keeps blowing, this is the side that powers the proximity sensors. i cant find any loose or broken or grounded wires. this happened 2 years ago when i moved the machine and i simply replaced the 2amp fuse and been running fine. well, i just moved again and this time the fuse blew again and the problem is here to stay. i am desperate for help as this is how i make my living and the support team at avid cnc only want to sell me a new control system, very frustated. thank you in advance, Dan

General Mach Discussion / mach 3 homing issue
« on: October 23, 2020, 01:16:12 PM »
howdy folks, i just recently moved my shop to a new location. my small cnc router is a custom build that i have been running almost flawlessly for over 2 years. it is controlled by a CNC Router Parts(now Avid CNC) Nema 23 plug and play control system with ESS and Mach 3 interface board(BOB). the control box has always been plugged into a surge protector power strip being shared with a monitor. i would always turn the system on with the power switch on the power strip, leaving the toggle switch on the controller always in the 'on' position. well, i used the power switch on the control box 2 or 3 times the other day setting things up and that 'made in china' switch failed...it is an EMI filter/power switch. i was able to bypass it and power up the machine.
next issue after that was immediate, i was unable to reset mach 3 as it was getting an e-stop error. i researched here and changed my e-stop setting to active low in Config>ports and pins>input signals...that worked! yay
now, i can't home my machine as each axis will just crash into the limit sensors without stopping. no light visible on the sensor when it should be.

is it possible that the power switch damaged something when it failed? is the lack of the EMI filter/power switch allowing some type of 'noise' to to interfere with the homing function? any help on this would be highly appreciated...i am down to one machine and busy season is upon us. thanks in advance. Dan

General Mach Discussion / Toolchange and Go To Zero buttons not working
« on: September 24, 2019, 09:59:56 AM »
hey folks, in trying to figure out how to use Run From Here i may have changed something with my safe z set up in config settings. now when i use the button to go to toolchange position, the z axis goes all the way up and trips the limit switch causing the machine to just freeze until reset. both of my machine are doing this and i realized today that it does the same thing by pressing the button to send it to the zero position too...what did i do? i am using mach 3 version R3.043.0453 with windows 7 and very old pcs(offline)- that will actually be for another discussion soon. thanks in advance, dan

FAQs / mach 3 toolchange issue
« on: September 18, 2019, 09:55:14 AM »
hello friends, i recently did some optimizing of my control pcs according to the steps shown in the 'ran out of data' help section. also, i made a couple of changes in the safe z set up settings in the config menu. i did not have any issues at first but now when i use the tool change button in my 2010 screenset the z goes all the way up and triggers an e stop. this is happening on both machines seperate control systems. also using ess if that matters. any ideas? im not sure exactly what i may have changed but something is not right. thank you in advance.db
