http://www.modbus.org/ is where MODBUS protocol is described, you can download the documents.

Thanks, Hood!

What do you say for the charge pump issue with the SS ? Can be omitted, or useful to trigger device`s ENABLE?

That is what I have decided after a while :)

Get yourself a SmoothStepper and forget about electronic gearing ;)

Feature Requests / Re: Automatic feedrate override

I had this question a time ago... I suppose this could be nicely done with some BRAINS logics, no?

SmoothStepper USB / Re: Does the SS have PWM outputs?
« on: April 24, 2009, 11:54:32 AM »
If I use a spindle controller that needs 10V Analog for speed control, then what connection is recommended?
(In case later I want to use tapping when it becomes available... here I suppose that tapping / threading is solved by synchronizing feed to the spindle speed+rotation dir.)

1. I use e.g. a MODBUS device with PWM output, and a pwm-analog converter circuit, and feedback spindle index / encoder pulse to the SS
2. I use another step/dir output of the SS, and use a freq-analog converter circuit, and feedback spindle index / encoder pulse to the SS
3. SS already has PWM out? (some kHz)

SmoothStepper USB / Re: SS And Mach3 Kernel Frequency

Kernel Freq. still has to be 25 kHz, or things have changed since?

I am also wondering what board to use... I need something without built in features, all I need is screw-terminals, and selectable direction (for pins2-9) and some protection...
i would add relays and fancy circuits separately.

Am I right to suppose that as SS goes from the USB there is no need for charge pump circuity? Or there is still good use for it, to output the ENABLE signal for the drives?

The PMDX-122 looks nice, it is almost what I need, but its price is quite high... (And I am in the EU, ordering and customs is problematic)

PoKeys / Re: New PoKeys software

Hello,

Could someone explain me the difference between a POKEYS and a MODBUS device?
ok, POKEYS goes USB with FPGA, should be faster, with different Protocol...

But my question is rather MACH-wise. Any PRO-s and contra-s? reliability, configurability, speed, etc?

Hi, John, what Break Out Boards are you using in that controlbox?

Feature Requests / Automatic feedrate override
« on: July 31, 2008, 03:44:19 PM »
I am working on a servo project (very slowly) and wondered, if an additional feature could be realised:

By feeding back MACH the servo loads of each axis, a feedrate override could be utilised, if any of the axis load goes beyond a certain percentage...
Now could someone tell me how to realize this feedback? e.g. modbus analog inputs? (no high resolution is needed) or even a digital input would be OK, saying any of axes are above x% load, so override feedrate by y%.... or something like that...

This way even steppers could be made unstallable (encoder feedback, and PID control on servo - this would work only with high-rate microstepping, the "stepper-servo" is quite nicely working, but of course similar control is needed as for DC servos)
