Heelo guys,

Simple question. I am basically profile cutting 6mm and 3mm plywood and 3mm MDF with Scrappy my home made CNC, I am cutting with 2mm 4 flute tungsten carbide end mills at 500mm/min, 1mm depth per cut @20,000rpm on KRESS. The problem is I am getting through them at a rate of knots, they are getting hot and snapping off, is there a good quality bit that will last longer than 10 minutes.

Did you completely uninstall Mach3? There are some hidden folders and drivers that require removing before re-installing, if in doubt Google it.

I did notice on your tuning page you have accelaration set at 0.007, that is incredibly slow, and velocity at 1.7, try increasing acceleration first, say 100.

Russ, it may sound daft, but have you checked the electrics/electronics. It does begin to sound as though something in that direction is not set correctly, voltage, amps, steps, loose wire maybe. Just a thought because the machine itself does look a good one.

Hood should be floating about, he is the man you need.

Link to his touchscreen thread if it helps - http://www.artsoftcontrols.com/forum/index.php?topic=698.msg3841#msg3841

I have a nice Allen Bradley Touchscreen for sale if you are interested? PM me if you are.

Seems you are getting to the motors sweet spot with the velocity settings. It took me a while as I thought faster was best, how wrong was I, you may find that 600 will suit your Z axis, no harm in trying?

How are the motors sounding?  Smooth and humming or jerky and noisy?

Reduce it by half again I would say.
I run mine at 1000 max for velocity, and even that I find is too fast when the machine is cold!

Hi Kolias

I don't know about the UC300 but the UC100 does a pretty good job and am ordering one myself following this video ---------http://stoneycnc.co.uk/cnc-control-electronics/

Limit switches and proximity switches do the same job but in different ways. Old style limit switches are mechanical and are prone to failure (springs or arms bent or broken or debris fouling it up), proximity switches are electronic using either IR or magnets to detect the limit. Again I am changing mine over to Proximity switches, simply because they have a smaller footprint and are less prone to mechanical failure.

Get a T slot bed, great for clamping chunky bits to it, use MDF spoiler board for when your not, simply saves the T bed from getting ripped up.

Hope that helps?

No worries Gary, enjoy your new hobby.

And welcome to the forum, ask away if you have a question, be patient for a reply.

From my limited experience Gary, I would avoid this at all costs until you get more experienced. Starting back up from where you left off would inevitably end up with a broken end mill, or worse...................Plan the work in advance, I think you can run simulation which will give you duration of process, work from that.
Hope that helps Gary?
