General Mach Discussion / Need Info
« on: March 27, 2016, 12:09:09 PM »
Question:

I am making screws in 1/8” mild steel.
I will drill a small hole in the metal. Then heat it to red & punch a hole the size needed to put a screw in it.
(1)   I understand that after the metal cools down the hole will become slightly larger & the punch will come out easier. Is this correct?

(2)   In the code can I put in a delay of 15 seconds before the CNC machine goes to the next hole, so I have time to heat up the next hole?   What is the code?

(3)   I need a router that runs very slow & powerful to make the screw threads. Is there a router out there & where I can buy one?

(4)   I then need to make the screw threads with a cutter that doesn’t cut the screw threads just forms it.  Where can I get one?

Thanks for the help

Show"N"Tell ( What you have made with your CNC machine.) / Gun Patterns
« on: February 20, 2014, 03:19:04 AM »
My 30 yr old son died January 7, 2014. He was a gun nut. He had a lot of guns. My wife wants me to make a small 8"x8" display box for a small urn from the crematorium. I want a 2" frame around the front with rifles & pistols carved around it. Does anyone know where I can purchase the dxf files. I have Aspire from Vectric so a crv file with profiles would be great, so I can size them to fit.

Thanks

Ron

Whats the difference between a limit switch & a Homing switch?

Is there a video or instructions that shows how to install & calibrate both of them them?

Thanks

General Mach Discussion / Resetting X & Y alignment
« on: January 09, 2014, 10:02:41 PM »
I need to make several parts with the same hole design.
My part is 6" x 12" so I cut a pocket the part will fit in so I only need 2 small clamps to hold it down.
Problem is I jogged the x axis by accident so now the holes are not correct. I do not have homing switches.
Is there any way I can reset X&Y to drill the holes correctly without cutting a new pocket & starting over?

Thanks  :-[

Tangent Corner / CNC Enclosure
« on: October 24, 2013, 02:00:06 AM »
I am building an Enclosure for my CNC machine. It will be 48” x 36” x 30” high using ¼” acrylic plastic. There will be no doors and it will be sealed, the entire enclosure moves up to the ceiling when not in use. Attached to the back will be a 1550 CFM dust collector with a 4” hose.

I plan to cut ¼” slats in the front for intake air flow.

How many sq. inches will I need for good air flow so it doesn’t suck the sides in and takes out the max. amount of dust?

Thanks to all the engineers out there.

General Mach Discussion / 1 X Axis Stops
« on: September 09, 2013, 09:40:32 PM »
I am testing a 4 axis system from Mike Beck (Hobby CNC Controller). Using Mach 3 from 2006 and when I go from Tool Path to Program Run one of the X axis motors stop & the other keeps running. The motors are 305 oz. This would be a problem if It was on my machine. Is this a known Problem or could it be my motors or controller ?

Another question, I am building a 4' X 3' machine. What size motors should I use if I plan to cut Aluminum ?

General Mach Discussion / Mike Beck vs Xylotex
« on: September 06, 2013, 04:13:42 PM »
I have purchased 2 units from Mike Beck & they work well. Xylotex cost a lot less. Which is the best???
They are both plug & play. I would like your opinions.

Is Mike Beck still in business? emailed him several times without a reply.

Thanks

General Mach Discussion / Machine Stoped in Middle of Table
« on: August 11, 2013, 10:23:05 PM »
I haven’t used my machine for about 3 years. This morning I wanted to see if it still worked, so I oiled everything (I was at X 0 Y 0). It worked just fine so I put in an old project & it cut as it should, on screen only no actual cutting.

I stopped it, turned Mach 3 & computer off (It stopped about half way down X  & Y). I came back later & it wouldn’t go back to X 0 Y 0. The screen showed it stopped at X 0 & Y 0, but the machine was still half way down X & Y.

How do I get it to move past the settings on the screen? Like I said its been 3 yrs since I did anything.

Thanks for your help
