Mach4 General Discussion / Re: Galil vs Vital

Hi Tony,

Quote
I revisited your responses from the beginning and I note that you mentioned the Gecko 320X.  I just had a look at those and they appear to be suitable.

Sorry to burst your bubble but I don't think they are suitable. The Geckos  G320 are expecting a rotary encoder that must be directly and positively linked to the servo motor
shaft. What you have is a linear scale that is not absolutely and directly linked. I suspect that that flexure/backlash/lost motion between the axis (as measured by the
linear scale) and the servo motor shaft would render the G320 feedback loop unstable.

Hi Tony,
should have added the price of a drive programming cable. I bought a USB to IEEE1390 for $62 including shipping.
Alternatively, and a bit cheaper, RS323 to IEEE1390 are about $35.

I regard a programming cable as all but essential if you are going to use late spec Delta servos.

Hi Tony,
with this new capability this would be my recommendation for your original question:

Replace your existing DC servos with 750W Delta A2 series servos and drives. They would operate dual loop, that is
with their own built-in encoder AND your existing linear scales.

The cost would be:
3 x Delta 750W A2 servo/servo drive            $1524.75
ESS                                                             $180.00
MB03 Breakout Board                                   $180.00

Total                                                           $1884.75  Plus shipping and taxes if any.

That solution would be cheaper than a new Galill but rather more than a Hicon (with analogue activations) but have the advantage
of crispy new servos.......I can promise you they will blow your socks off!

Hi,
just saw this:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/ECMA-C10807RS-ASD-A2-0721-L-DELTA-A2-750w-3000rpm-AC-servo-motor-driver-kit/172283162086?hash=item281ce06de6:g:TkYAAOSwIsFcpYRy

It would appear that the A2 series is NOT that much dearer than the B2 series. I wish I had known that a month or so
ago!

Mach4 General Discussion / Re: smooth braking not working.
« on: November 05, 2019, 01:25:00 AM »
Hi,
Mach3 had a setting called a 'Slow Zone' which reduced axis velocity within a given distance of a soft limit. Mach4 does not
have that feature programmed into it but you could easily program it into either the PLC script or the PMC script. The
PMC script is the equivalent of Mach3 Brains.

The question I ask is 'do you need it?'. If Mach determines that your code or jogging will take you out of bounds ie exceed
your soft limits it will 'limit' out and stop. If it approaches a soft limit at full speed provided it has time to decelerate an reverse away
it can carry on at full speed as far as I'm concerned, Mach will determine if that is the case, and if not, Estop 'Soft Limit
Exceeded'. So who cares about a slow zone?

I've been using Mach4 for four years and have not missed 'Slow Zone'.

Hi,
dedicated Mini-ITX dual core Atom PC......no antivirus.....I don't just mean turned off its just not loaded onto the PC,
likewise a firewall...its just not there. I used Windows7 Embedded which allows, within limits, what is installed and what is
not. I elected to not load any extraneous stuff. I do not expect or require my machine PC to play music or videos ergo
no need for all that multi-media stuff, as an example.

Hi,

Quote
So with my old Compaq dc7700 computer with parallel port , USB and Ethernet sockets, what operating system do you suggest I install - Win 7 32 bit ?

If you are going to Mach4 and a required USB or Ethernet connected motion controller as opposed to Darwin then install whatever you like, Mach4 and controller
doesn't care.

If you are going to get an external motion controller there are a number of options ranging from about $120 through to thousands, but my preference
is an Ethernet SmoothStepper for about $180. You can hook a G540 to that and maybe if you had a auxillary C10 breakout board ($23) it would give you plenty
of extra inputs and outputs.

Quote
I like the strong support here for Gecko G540. Do you connect each of the 3 stepper motors directly to it? And does it have a speed control for the spindle motor?

Yes, you connect three steppers direct to the G540, it has four stepper drivers built in. It has a PWM to analogue converter but you need a speed controller to convert
the 0-10V analogue to spindle motor current, the G540 does not do that.

Hi,
yes the Delta A2 series have dual reading encoder inputs, you can have the best of both worlds, a 1,280,000 count per rev rotary encoder AND
your existing linear scales. The A2 series commands a premium of several hundred dollars over the 'standard' B2 series.

As I have posted previously, modern AC servos and their drives just leave all the old DC servos in the dust!!!

Hi,
I did at one time deal with a few plasma tables but not CNC machining centers, so excepting some experience gained
from customers plasma tables my knowledge is as a hobbyist only.

Hi,
Mach3 AND Mach4 both work well but all development of Mach3 ceased six years ago, as a consequence Mach3 must
be regarded as a 'sunset' product whereas Mach4 is current and developing and recommended for all new builds.

I echo Tweakie's recommendation for the Gecko G540. Its fairly simple and has the capacity of one (only) 'parallel ports
worth of IO' and is only 50V capable rather than 80V as I had previously recommended. It is a Gecko product however and is good
quality. You would never regret the $300 on quality at least.....you may wish later that you had held out for individual
drives and a breakout board/boards/motion controller with more IO.

Note that the G540 can be driven directly by a parallel port thereby avoiding the cost of a motion controller. There is a Mach4
ready parallel port driver called Darwin ($25 license fee applies) but the Mach3 parallel port driver is free. If cheap sounds good
to you then Mach3 and a parallel port is the way to go. Be aware that the parallel port absolutely requires a 32 bit OS
Windows7 or earlier and will not work with most laptops. Even some desktop PCs just don't make good Mach3 parallel port
machines. often without particular rhyme or reason.
