Tangent Corner / Re: Which Plasma Torch
« on: August 10, 2007, 04:22:55 AM »
I am looking for one myself. I read up on it and found out that there are some with an electronic ignition system which can cause a lot of problems in the associated electronics. Hypertherm is the brand which seems to be the most desirable. I have not bought one yet, but tend to buy the smaller Hypertherm. There are a few ebay deals from a dealer which seem to be alright. And...... seriously consider a water bath to massively cut down on the fine metal dust that process generates and shortens and ruins everything in contact with it.

No problems whatsoever here. If you have 'random' depth when plunging then your drive/motor section is flawed. If you have a constant offset, then your parameters in Mach3 are flawed, or the generated toolpath has a problem. Toolpath is easy to check while looking at the generated code.

If you want a Linux Controller, then use EMC. Works well to.

I finally found out that the Taig Lathe Spindle fit's perfectly to the Tool Changer and is otherwise identical to the ER16 spindle. So, I got that (cheap!!!) and am in tool changing heaven.
Works just great.

General Mach Discussion / Stepper Torque Fall Off...
« on: June 30, 2007, 10:56:17 PM »
I am looking for information regarding the torque fall off of stepper motors over the RPM bandwidth they support.
Specially Mach3 -> Gecko -> 600-1800Oz/Inch motor.
My focus is on the range between 0 and 800 RPM. 0 is easy, that's the rated holding torque.
After that it goes down hill. But how fast?  Guesstimations range from 20% to 65% left at 1000RPM.
Any pointer to more information or where to find motor curves would be great.

Life with the new changer sucks 8(. The part does not fit. It seems that I would need a different spindle. It's just that TAIG does not have a different one in the catalog. This experience fit's right into the line of deliveries I recently procured. Nothing fit's, no description fit's the part ordered, and support is slow or not available. Emails for requests are not answered and there is an attitude if you complain regarding miss matches. No wonder that Artsoft has success. Now all I need is Artsoft delivering parts the same way.....

PS:Where is the link to this automatic tool changer?

Tangent Corner / cutting threads?!
« on: June 20, 2007, 10:35:06 AM »
I wonder what tools I would need for my small taig mill to cut threads?
A v-cutter would probably do for my 4-th axis and the outer thread... but how can I cut a thread into a hole with the mill?
I try and cut threads more for an ornamental reason into 1-2 Inch wooden rods...
Thanks for some pointers!
