Tangent Corner / How fast can I go? Safely...
« on: May 22, 2007, 07:22:56 PM »
I am routing my first relief on my TAIG. Yessssssssssss!
I use a 3/32nd carbide ball end mill with a 1/4 tool diameter step over in MDF.
Works like a charm with 4IPM at up to a maximum 0.25 Inch cutting depth.
It seems... that I can go much faster. I started with 2IPM and now I tweaked it up to 4IPM.
Sounds good, no heat, simply carving away happily.
What would be the professional recommendations?

Is there a general table/rule of thumb/formula which can yield a recommended maximum speed for cutters and materials?
Or is this where the experience and the broken cutters start?
I plan to use aluminium at one stage.... but hesitate right now as I have no experience there.
One IPM might be to fast already... No idea.... so I stay away for now.

Thanks in advance for some insights

General Mach Discussion / Limit/Home switch X-axis problem...
« on: May 21, 2007, 03:44:06 PM »
Great, I have all limit and home switches mounted on the machine. All works but the X-Axis....

When I let the machine home, it homes to the wrong side of the x axis. If I reverse the axis or home negative, the move to home seems to be alright, but then it simply drives into the end switch and instead of reporting home and auto-zero, it simply reports LIMIT SWITCH HIT and that's the end of that. How can I home to the right end switch and not to the left one?

Right now my tool 0,0,0 is above the right most corner towards the operator. It should be the left most corner so positive x movements go to the right.

Btw... I can inverse the Y-Axis and home and negative home. All good. All works. Just the X-Axis does not do the same. It only homes to one side and indicates a limit switch hit on the other side (negative homing).

Thanks for a hint, it's the only thing preventing me to run the machine. Sighhhh.

General Mach Discussion / Mach3 G100 Question
« on: May 20, 2007, 04:36:18 PM »
After a couple of weeks I have a handle on Mach3. PURE FUN!!!!!
But still, I have intermittent Parallel Port issues. Nothing major, just annoying.
So, to get rid of any machine load/parallel port dependecies.... would this work:

2.4 GHZ IBM Laptop communicating to
G100 Controller connected to xylotex driver.

Thanks for critique!

General Mach Discussion / PCI EPP Parallel Port Card

Would it be beneficial to use a dedicated EPP Port card versus the on board Parallel port?

General Mach Discussion / A-Axis direction problem
« on: May 06, 2007, 11:55:11 AM »
I can jog the a-axis clockwise and counter clockwise.

When I set my sherline table to the zero indicator and issue 'G0A10' the table moves clockwise to the 350 indicator. That is correct.
After that I issue 'G0A0' and the table positions back to the Zero indicator while turning counter clockwise. That is correct as well.
Now I issue 'G0A-10' an the table moves clockwise to the 350 indicator. That is WRONG. It should turn counter clockwise to the 10 degree indicator on the table. What am I doing wrong?

Settings are:
a-Axis angular
Rot 360 rollover
Ang short Rot on G0

However, I could not find any documentation regarding the 'Rot 360 Rollover' and the 'Ang short Rot on G0' settings and have to guess there.

Ideas?

General Mach Discussion / Mach3 crashing
« on: May 05, 2007, 06:50:36 PM »
The currently locked version of Mach3 is crashing my laptop. (Mach3 2.0.065)
It runs, I also found the right steps for the A-Axis sherline table and I can jog and enter G-Code all day long.
The moment I load a generated file for example from DeskProto) Mach3 starts working on it and randomly between line 10 and 100 it crashes my laptop so bad the the mouse cursor stops moving and I have to actually take the battery out to kill it.
The G-Code is about 2MB and is displayed alright in the little window (can I make that LARGERRRR ???).
Software installed is deskproto rhino4 and mach3.
I also went through the optimization and deleted or switched off anything recommended there.

I have 1GB Ram and a P4 with 2.4GHz speed.

Any Ideas where I can look for problems?

Tangent Corner / End Mill starter kit
« on: May 04, 2007, 09:34:35 AM »
Hi all

I just finished building my Taig Kit and am looking forward to some cutting.
Due to the fact that I'm new to the matter I would ask for some advice regarding a nice set of end mills for my mini mill.
My intentions are 4 axis wood cutting and maybe with much lower priority aluminium to build little jigs for my wood working.
But right now, wood carving and detailing is my priority.
Besides that I have to engrave in acrylics and metal.
I took a look at several options and am a bit at a loss. There are gazillions of options. Diamond engraver, carbide.... and whatnot.
I fear that if I start buying stuff at ebay I will end up with an end mill which arrives with a truck, ready to carve an elephant out of a redwood tree in 1:1 scale.
So... if someone could help me figure what a good starter kit is and where those precious items can be ordered best then I would be very grateful.
Unfortunately it seems that here in New Jersey (Newark area) there are no 'go to and pick up stores'. I called around and all I found were a few mega store/middle men who distribute to 'vending machines' at their client sides. Unfortunately I don't have access to such a vending machine. Which.... is probably a good thing 8))).

Have a great weekend
