General Mach Discussion / Re: To switch on or not?

Hi Hood, there is no resistance between 12v and 0v or 5v and 0v but I bit the bullet and switcher her on.
All seems fine at the monent with the servi drivers working ok. Not sure how this will pan out with noise issues but thanks for your support so far.

Yes, the 48v power supply is connected to two stepper drives and two servo drives. If the PC PSU is disconnected from the servo drives, then the main 48v power supply has no connection to earth which is why I am thinking it is the PC PSU which is at fault.
The PC PSU powers a BOB with 5v, a couple of 12v fans and provides the 12v to the servo drives. Are there any other measurments I can take to verify the PCPSU is at fault before I strip it out?

Between the fuse (between my 48v psu capacitor and servo drive) and the chassis, or star earthing block. This is with the power to everything switched off.

I have managed to blow a DG3S 8020 drive with my 75v servo motors and since removing the drive I have just noticed that the resistance from the main PSU (now 48v) to the chassis of the cabinet is reading zero on the ohmmeter. If I disconnect the logic PSU (seperate PC PSU to supply 5v and 12v which is installed in the cabinet) then the resistance is high.
So, is this a faulty PC PSU or am I worrying about nothing?

Yep, that is what I have got here. I take it that it is good pactice to use a sheilded power cable to the servos as well as shielded encoder cables?

Ok, 6-axis screenset is one by "Darc" downloaded from the forums here I have also had the same problems with the standard screenset.
The mixture of high and low actives are there simply because they work and I do not know any better. I must admit I am a little embarrassed about this but I am being honest.
I am jogging using the keyboard hotkeys, but using a 64 bit Win7 laptop through ethernet smoothstepper. I have not tried MDI yet but will do shortly.

General Mach Discussion / Axis moving on its own

Hi guys, I am in the final throws of getting a 5-axis saw working but I am getting the Z-axis moving on its own as I jog the Y-axis.
I have a star grounding system with everything grounded EXCEPT the power leads to the servo motors. Is this the next thing to try or can somebody please double check my config for an error. Drives are cncdrives DG3S and these are fed via an ESS board.
Thanks, Jason.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Angular moves - choose direction?

Always the way, anyways I will have a go at it and let you know the outcome in a few weeks once installed.
Thanks for the help so far, Jason.

edit: it is the rotate I am worried about more than the tilt. Tilt will only ever go 90 degrees downwards.

Grrr, didn't want to show this as it is for work. What the hell, if it gets the point across!

The finished product will cut rafters for timber framed building roofs. You can see the notch in the gear, and as TP says, it is a fault on the machine.

Yes it is a bridge saw, with home around the mid-point of travel. The saw will move 180 degrees positive and 120 degrees negative.
I just cant risk the saw moving the "long way round" to go home.
