General Mach Discussion / Re: Bridgeport Knee Mill Conversion?
« on: November 15, 2016, 03:19:27 PM »
Hi Dave,
I have used the recommended method with the Mach 3 whereby you go to settings page, do a run, and check out what is with what should be and set up to suit. I have found in use that that is way easier to do and likely more accurate (at anyrate with my maths!). I have used this for several years without accuracy problems. Worth trying before you get knee deep in numbers.

cheers, Dave.

Hi Dave,
I, years ago, put cnc on my ancient Henry Milnes knee type mill. When it came to the z direction I reckoned that the weight of the table, cross slide and knee (probably 250 lbs or more), would take care of any backlash in in the set-up so that I connected a fairly hefty stepper motor with a 3/1 stepdown that has worked perfectly for the last 6 years. It would be a very strong tool and motor that would lift any backlash into the system using the stepper onto the original windup on the mill and has proved to be troublefree, saving the expence and work of installing a new screw. Gravity wins!

Hi Steve,

I used Zappautomation for the bits (ballscrews, controllers, motors and bob's, the lot) I found Gary very helpful especially with advice as I got onto trouble. I would give him a ring at 01202 237770.

Best of luck, Dave.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Now the Orac is 90% done, mill next!

Hi Croz, I am still new at this but when I was deciding to convert my old mill I came to the conclusion that, having a table, carriage and knee weight of something like a quarter of a ton I could well ignore backlash as gravity does the job for me. Obviously, if you feel that a cutter could lift your table then you will need to take this into account. So far it has worked for me perfectly by gravity.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Zapp Automation - anyone used?

Robinson.
I used Zapp Automation to convert an old Henry Milnes mill They were very helpful and pretty prompt in dealing with deliveries.

The Milnes was a very heavily built machine. I put ballscrews on x & y reasoning that the tremendous weight of the carriage and slides would more than nullify the backlash! So far so good. I used the heavy stepper mentioned for the z due to the weight and so far it has coped and run satisfactorily.
