The answer is 'it depends'. I would absolutely NOT try any program that required much processor or system resources along side Mach wen using the parallel port driver. If your using a motion control board then what Mch is doing is far less time critical. If Agilant Vee Pro goes in and futzs with system timers then you may be out of luck as well. I also have an anti-virus program on all my machines. Some of them, like McAfee, will just up and decide to start scanning everything which can be a bad thing if Mach is running. I also set automatic update to 'Notify Only' so I can download and install updates when I want and not in the middle of cutting parts.

It is a very compact unit, it adds about 1.6" in length. I don't have them on my website yet as I'm working on a whole new site. You can see them here: http://www.precisebits.com/products/equipment/er16_colletadapter.asp , I have the CEPG-ER16-KIT in stock, which comes with the adapter, closing nut and wrenches: $85.39 USD. I also have a large selection of ER-16 collets in stock for $10 ea.

The ER adapters I have will give you the entire range of ER16 collets.

The key word here is 'VFD'. VFD's are VERY noisy critters. Look at the catalog for your manufacturers VFD and they will likely have line reactors (if it is a 3 phase input) to reduce noise problems. Mounting the VFD away from the rest of your controls is also helpful. If you have a VFD then likely you are using its build in on/off inputs? Are you using an isolated BOB?

Make sure your wiring and earth grounding is proper. Also a good line filter on the spindle motor and arc snubbers on any relays that switch AC will work wonders.

Split reducer bushings can lead to horrible run-out. If you can chuck in a 1/2" shank would you be interested in an ER-16 adapter chuck? It will let you use ER-16 collets so you can chuck up about any size shank.

SmoothStepper USB / Re: Stop button press loses comm with SS

The development verions are typically made to test a new feature and are not tested for compatibility with all the other things out there for Mach. The downside is that it might or might not work.

I would not use the developent version with the SS. Use the latest lockdown version of Mach with the lates SS plug-in and driver.
