Z Max for softlimits should be Zero and Z Min is minus *** , ie *** being the travel of your Z axis.
When in normal machining you use a work offset, the default is G54 and that is what you see in the DROs when you dont have the machine coords showing. Normally Z0 is the surface of your material and all cutting Z moves are negative, having said that some router guys seem to use the table as zero and all cutting moves are a positive value.
Probably best to use LazyCAM but afraid I have no experience with it so hopefully someone else will chime in for that.
