General Mach Discussion / third axis for lathe
« on: November 04, 2016, 03:05:59 PM »
About a year ago i posted a request for info on setting up a 3rd axis on a lathe
the purpose is for operating the tailstock screw for things like drilling or positioning
a running centre.

Anyone got any new ideas ? or maybe a screen

General Mach Discussion / speed setting with setup string
« on: October 01, 2016, 11:30:09 AM »
Hello Chaps
in "general config" there is a field that is called initialization string

If I add S1000 to this setup string does that mean that when I activate
or toggle the "spindle" button that the spindle motor should turn at
the speed of 1000 rpm??
thanks

General Mach Discussion / off topic- but maybe someone can help
« on: October 01, 2016, 03:13:46 AM »
Hello Chaps,

Inverter setup problem

Sorry to post off topic- but it is saturday here and commercial outlets are all closed

I have a lathe running mach3 and the speed is being controlled by an omron MX2 multi function inverter.
I cannot figure out how this inverter works because i am not an electronics fundi.

The problem is that when i switch mach3 on and toggle "spindle on" the chuck turns very slowly
( about 50 rpm) and when I run a wizard the speed does'nt translate to the motor correctly.

I suspect that there is a parameter within the controller that is not set correctly.

My initialization string ( under general config ) call for S1500 and the "motor config" is set for max 1500
min 300 .

Am I correct in assuming that without any code loaded if i toggle" spindle on" then the motor should run at
1500rpm ?

I have an "eye" which reads the spindle speed correctly but the "S" dro does not show the correct spindle
speed.

Help will be appreciated

General Mach Discussion / 3rd axsx on lathe
« on: May 15, 2016, 12:33:46 PM »
Hello chaps--
I asked the question before but cant find the thread ( sorry )
I am using mach 3 on a small bench lathe and would like to set the tailstock
as the 3rd axis ( for drilling, centering and other odds and ends).

Please point me to the instructions for doing this.

I am using the standard simple screen that is the default-- and maybe now is the time
to upgrade - all suggestions and hints  gratefully recieved

General Mach Discussion / CSS - in meteres or milimeters
« on: April 26, 2016, 08:58:00 AM »
Hello Chaps-
Mach 3 on lather
I have units set as metric.

Setting CSS via gcode is G96 S????

Is the S word in metres or in mm?

My product cuts nicely at 900 rpm on a diameter of 100 mm
Is the following logic correct
100mm X PI= 314.16 mm per rev.
900 rpm will mean 314.16 X 900 = 282744 mm per minute
= 282.744  metres per minute
the block will read G96 S282.7   ??

Next thing is feed per rev that was set by G95 respected??

Thanks in advance

Fred

General Mach Discussion / wizard setting incorrect default for g94
« on: April 15, 2016, 10:07:20 AM »
Hello All
I am using the wizards and they work well but for some reason it is always setting the
feed at g94.
I prefer g95-
how can i get the wizaed always to use g95 instead of g94?

General Mach Discussion / is this stepper big enough?
« on: April 10, 2016, 08:17:12 AM »
Hello Chaps --
I am not in the least accomplished in electronics and electrical stuff

Firstly -I have heard that steppers have there most torque when running very slowly?
Is this correct.
Therfore am i right to assume that a direct connected drive will be the most powerful way of
connecting the stepper to the leadscrew??

I am attaching a picture of a stepper motor ( no names or labels on it ) and a picture of
my benck milldrill. Can anyone tell me if the stepper shown will be OK for connecting to the
mill drill shown by a direct drive onto a 5mm pitch ball screw?
the drive will be powering the left to right feed and the front to back feed
Would it be better to use a toothed belt and gear the motor speed down ? small pulley on
motor bigger pulley on lead screw??
All comments will be appreciated
And many thanks
