Afaik, no motion controllers will run from the stepper motor power supply, unless it's a board that requires 24V, and you happen to be running your steppers at 24V.

Most motion controllers run on 5V, or sometimes 12V.

Your chinese board has an integrated breakout board, which is why it requires 24V.

That's a pirated version of a Planet CNC board, and I'm not even sure if a legal PlanetCNC license will work with it.
I've seen several people run into issues with those boards in the last year.

In Mach3, load the Digitizing Wizard.
Try this.
Go to Operator > Edit Button Script, and click the "Create and Load G-code" Button. TheMach3 script editor should open, with the Wizard code.

Find these two lines:

code " G31 Z" & Min
code " G0 Z" & Safe

and replace them with

code " G31 Z" & Min
code " G91"
code " G0 Z0.005"
code " G90"

In the Script Editor, go to File > Save, and close the editor.
The modified wizard should now lift the probe .005" after each probe move. Adjust the value as needed (Z0.005)

Test carefully, as I haven't checked to see if this works.

Why are you concerned about .001"  when cutting wood?

You'r most likely chasing flex in your machine, and a variety of issues can cause size issues greater than .001"

During the 2010 installation, you won't lose any macros. The installer puts the 2010 macros in a separate folder, and the user needs to copy them into their profile folder.
The only macros that would overwrite yours would be the M6Start and M6End macros., You can choose to use the default macros if you'd like.
The screenset should have no affect on any of your other Mach3 settings, or Mach3's operation.

I think it depends on the motion controller. Some motion controls can do rigid tapping, which requires a closed loop spindle, while other can not.

I have my auto zero routine zero all of the offsets, so it doesn't matter which one is current.
