General Mach Discussion / Re: IF you wanted to UPGRADE to MACH4 ??

The same business that developed Mach3 is the same business developing Mach4. nuff said:)

Just read the new release notes.
They started adding support for 3D printing.
The program is unusable (or is it not desirable?) for controlling routers and mills, and they're adding more features to support other types of machines.
How about getting it actually working so people can and will want to use it, before you start adding more and more features?

You're right, it does look like Mach3 all over again.

Without a license, Mach3 will display and run only 500 lines of the g-code.

Most likely, what your seeing is an incorrect IJ mode in Mach3, and possibly a g-code limit for an unlicensed version.

You can change the IJ mode to Incremental in General Config.
You can also have CamBam add a G91.1 to your g-code, which will force Mach3 into Incremental IJ mode (which is what CamBam is most likely using).

I'm assuming you mean upgrading from Mach3?

1) No idea of plugin status for devices, ie, what works or not. I was looking at using a CS Labs motion controller, but their Mach4 Plugin is from 12-17-2014. They said in January that their would be updates every few months, but there hasn't been one in about 8 months now.
Give me some idea that when I spend $700, that it's going to work.

2) No CV mode controls.

I think it was 2 years ago, that Automation Technologies (Keling) was selling boards with Mach4 Lite as a pre-release, and it was supposed to be released around October 2013. After that, it seems to have vanished.
I can't see how Mach4 Lite could have been ready 2 years ago, with the current state of Mach4 hobby 2 years later.

1836
It was supposed to have been released over a year ago, and called Mach4 Lite.

If they don't do something like this, then new users will be flocking to the alternatives. Unless they come up with a way to setup Mach4 that's considerably easier than it currently is.

So I just figured something, it doesn't seem to exclusively be an issue of acceleration but one of velocity as well.

I bet if you lower your accel by half, it'll shake less.
It's really not so much the velocity, but how Mach3 accelerates and decelerates. Imagine driving in your car at a fairly quick rate, and then stopping very quickly, keeping even pressure on the brakes until you come to a complete stop. When you stop, the car will jerk backwards, as the suspension allows the inertia to carry it further than the tires.
Mach3 stops in a similar fashion, only instead of the suspension, it's the flex in the machine that allows it to jerk backwards as it comes to a complete stop. The bigger and heavier the machine, The more it's going to flex when you change direction. If you decelerate slower, then the machine may flex back to it's original state before it stops. If you decelerate faster, then it may not stabilize until it comes to a complete stop.

A lot of high end routers use proprietary controls, with S-Curve acceleration. At work, we have a Morbidelli router. It has a gantry that's supported at only one end, and is about 80" long. We regularly cut at 22,000 mm/min, and it cut's perfect, square corners at all times, and can take very deep cuts at high speeds with no noticeable flex. I don't know what the acceleration rate is, but I can assure you that it's far greater than yours. it reaches 22m/min in about 12" of travel.
However, if I try to cut something with lots of very short, straight segments, the quick direction changes can cause the gantry to vibrate enough to visibly affect the cut quality.
But in normal use, the S-Curve acceleration allows it to run perfectly smooth, with zero vibration.

On my homebuilt wooden machine, I've often used the Tempest test version of Mach3 for it's smoothness and accuracy, on a machine with a lot of flex.

1838
Part of the issue is that the machine is not rigid enough, but also the fact that Mach3 uses a linear accel and decel, which can get rather violent at higher rates.

There's an old experimental version of Mach3 with an S curve trajectory planner, called Tempest. Unfortunately, it's very limited, with no feedhold, and it may only work with the parallel port. It will run your machine very smooth, though.

Your options are probably to set your accel as fast as you can and still get acceptable results, or try a different controller with a better trajectory planner. You don't necessarily need S-Curve acceleration, but you need a control that will allow you to specify a maximum path deviation, so that it won't round corners with a slower acceleration..

1839
You shouldn't be able to do any damage. What I was referring to, was that if the machine is not rigid enough, you may start to see shaking and vibrations as you increase acceleration.

Quote
I did have that option in mind but I had one worry, when I'm running the machine at high speeds and if it somehow does come to an abrupt stop, for example if I do a stop command instead of a pause, you can hear a fairly loud impact like sound when the machine comes to a sudden stop. Will this happen during acceleration/deceleration................

It makes a loud noise because you're telling your machine to try and defy the laws of physics and stop instantly. You should never use the "stop" button while the machine is moving, except for emergencies (where you should really be using the e-stop).
It shouldn't really make any noise during accelerating or decelerating, unless you have faulty components, or a flexible machine.

1840
If your machine is really solidly built, then I don't think that 1.1Kw servos are overkill at all.

As Terry said. it's all about the acceleration.

Just hope that they built it as solidly as you think, because when you increase acceleration, the forces the machine will see will get a lot larger.
