The best combo of a do everything setup is a fixed gantry bed mill . It can normaly do everything well. Just make teh long axis inline with teh gantry for the smallest package.

BP makes ok conversion if you already have one and do not need an ATC OR just lift the Knee instead of the Quill.

Ideally with a z stepper you try to get 1" of motion per 2-4 Turns of the stepper. At 2 turns you can normally outrun your THC at top speed and at 4 you should be well in the range of GOOD and not stall teh stepper

Slow down teh G28.1 speed in Mach3 or lower the accel rate of Z. First I would change out teh feedscrew to a much courser feed. You are simply overspeeding the motor.

IF I remember correctly they are just cheaply put together with cheap chinese electronics and are router type cutters not really what you would class as a MILL.

I think you have the old problem of a marginal table with a bit of loose motion and NOT a heavy weight frame Which gives you little damping effects AND running microsegmented code that Mach3 does not handle well. Have you bumped up your look ahead to at least 200 ??  Do you have any setting set in the CV mode.  

The problem starts for mach3 not being able to handle CV in microsegmented code very well so it ends up running as exact stop. Then the banging starts as the frame not being a rigid structure cannot dampin the resonance properly. Mach3 has a bang bang planner and that does not help matters with fast tables.

SO you end up with shake rattle and roll. AN Scurve planner would smooth thing s out a lot.

That would be a setting in teh DTHC  tip saver is probably locking you out (;-) or teh Minmax setting in mach3  or (;-) the list goes on.

Dave if you ever get a chance try a 5-8mm pitch on the screw/direct drive . As is you run out of motor speed/accel  before you run out of THC responce speed (motor stalls first)

OK YES you do indeed have to come OUT of any offsetting to use G28.1.  But with plasma why would you be using offsets ? Just curious or did your old CAM does it.

You can program around that problem add this to the start of the script of the script.   Can you post a copy of the file. It may help IF I can see exactly what the Gcode looks like in actual useage.  IF we can get that cleared up it may be we can trim back some of the script to make it work better(faster).
