Show"N"Tell ( Your Machines) / Re: My Bridgeport clone project
« on: October 04, 2013, 11:27:11 AM »
I've actually managed a bit of progress recently, and things are very very slowly coming together.

I've finally managed to get the spindle motor and the new A section pulleys all made and mounted up, and earlier this week I succeeded in getting the VFD wired up, albeit currently fed with a plug and lead rather than the proper wiring, but it's up and running now in some form at least....

A plate has been made for mounting the Y axis stepper and the bearing to support the ballscrew bearing...

...although this is now delayed, as fiddling fingers of my God Son unwound it and its lost half its balls.....

I've finished off the Z axis motor and its cover, an also got the blanking plates made and fitted for all the old controls relating to its manual head days....

Most importantly, I've made a new gear tray for the electrical cabinet, and started mounting the control gear....

The original machine cabinet will house the main power distribution, the stepper drivers and the power supply for the steppers, with the VFD for the spindle housed in another enclosure above it, forced draught cooling air fed to both.  I'm reverting back to my desktop PC for the time being, this will be housed in another enclosure, along with the BOB and SS.  Hopefully that accounts for everything!

As a minimum?  I'm just looking at a couple of cheap 15" monitors and they seem to be over 1366x768 in any case.

Thanks for the reply

I've had a chance of plan...  I was originally going to buy a laptop for running my bridgeport, but I've decided now to use my old desktop PC.  It saves me money for a while, and it's a known quantity...I could buy a cheap laptop from a well known auction site but it'd be an unknown - and I've been there before.

So as I need to buy a new monitor for it, what's the smallest size one can realistically get away with?

Mach3 under Vista / Re: Will Mach3 work on a Windows8 machine?

My IT man at work has been on to Dell today, I want a new laptop for when I get started with Mach3, windows 8 is about all they'll do, apart from a stupid price for a win7 one

If you re - reference the machine, why do you need to reset the origin of the part?  That's a bit crap!  Mostly we don't have to re - reference a machine at work after Estop, but there should be no need to reset the origin of a job, quite often the work we do you can't re set the origin after you've started machining - like turning a ball for example

Are there any UK suppliers of Smoothsteppers and BOB's that use ethernet or USB?  Just thinking it may work out cheaper than paying in USD and then the import when Customs slap their bit on.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Boxford AUD stepper sizes
« on: November 30, 2012, 05:54:23 AM »
My plan is to put the Z axis motor behind the headstock.  Mine is an underdriven version so I've room to do it.  Don't know if there's space on a bench mounted version.  The Z axis leadscrew should be easy to change then, using the old tailstock end bearing housing, and slightly modifying the headstock end to provide thrust faces.  The front of the saddle also seperates from the top, so construction of a new one with the ballnut on, and a mounting for the X axis stepper given a short enough stepper, should be a doddle.

It is about the same size yes.  Lacks the top speed of the Myford which can be a drawback, but does seem to have a lot more grunt than the Myford for tackling large tough castings....certainly more than my friends Super7conessieur
