General Mach Discussion / Shuttle Pro V2 Keystroke mapping
« on: April 12, 2010, 02:29:40 PM »
I am a new user of both Mach3 and machine tools -- in my case a Sherline lathe and Taig Mill. I bought the Shuttle Pro to make it easier to run my tools in "manual" mode since the system I bought from Soigeneris is not configured for manual milling. Mach3 has a configuration screen which is nicely done but I am such a novice I am not sure which keys to configure for what behavior. Does anybody have recommended configurations that I could use until I get more experience and can customize for my own preferences? In particular I am interested in how to set up keys for changing jog modes, and toggling jog speeds. Whatever can be offered will be appreciated. Frank

General Mach Discussion / Machine vs Program Coords questions
« on: February 10, 2010, 02:10:02 PM »
I know beginner questions are annoying so I appreciate your patience. In Turn I am unclear as to why on the manual screen there is a Program Coords. and a Work Coords. button. Smid's book on CNC Programming says that Program and Work Coordinates are the same thing.  There does not seem to be any explanation for this in the manual.

Also, is there anyway to tell when the Axis DRO is showing Machine Coordinates vs. Program Coordinates. You can tell this on the manual screen because the appropriate LED is lighted. However, on the Auto Prep and Auto Cycle screens it appears you cannot tell which mode you are in. I have found this confusing, but it could be I just don't know what I am doing.

I am wondering is there is any way to locate the 0 point of an axis in machine coordinates when the axis is not at that point, i.e. specifying zero without hitting the zero button. At one point when I was at z= 1 relative to where I want 0 to be I tried typing in 1 in the Axis DRO which I hoped would force  Mach3 to set 0 at a point -1 from where I was, but it would not take this. It is not a problem to jog the axis to right point, I am just curious if this can be done.

Thanks, Frank

General Mach Discussion / Jog Button Uni-directional in Turn
« on: February 10, 2010, 01:37:42 PM »
I notice that when I try to change jog cycles in Turn the increments always go from high to low regardless of whether I push the right or left arrow. Is this a bug? It is not really more than an annoyance, but I wonder if there is bug list somewhere so users can consult that to confirm whether or not their system is functioning properly? Thanks, Frank

General Mach Discussion / Feed Hold and Single Issues
« on: February 09, 2010, 11:07:33 PM »
I have a small program that am testing with Mach3 Lathe. I want to step through the program but it appears there is no way of knowing if step mode is on. Am I wrong about this? I can't find any indicator that tells the status of the toggle. So what I do is push cycle start and if the programs starts to run more than one block without stopping I push Feed Hold. However when I do that the program does not stop. It appears the only way I can stop it to hit STOP. Can any one explain how Feed Hold is supposed to work and if there is anyway of knowing what mode Single is in? Thanks.

General Mach Discussion / Regen Command on Lathe
« on: February 09, 2010, 01:21:14 PM »
What does the Regen commmand on the Manual Screen of Lathe do? Can anybody point to where it is documented? Nothing in the index that I can find. I clicked on it and after that my Axis DRO went a bit haywire. When I told it to jog .10 it showed a jog of from .155 to .165. I don't know if there was a connection, it is the only thing I can think of to explain why jogging suddenly became erratic.

G-Code, CAD, and CAM discussions / Block Skip Enable in Lathe

Can you enable block skip in Mach3 Lathe? If so how and can somebody point to where in the documentation this is explained?

G-Code, CAD, and CAM discussions / BobCAM G-code 96 or 97 Error in Mach3
« on: January 31, 2010, 11:20:13 PM »
Hi,  I am new to Mach3 and to CNC machining, but love doing this stuff. I have a Sherline lathe with a Soigeneris controller. I draw in Rhino, and use BobCAD's CAM to set up my g-code.  I have Smid's CNC Programming book on order and hope to be writing my own g-code soon. (By the way if you can recommend a good g-code tutorial that has demo programs please let me know). That out of the way, my question is:

BobCAD created a g-code program for me using canned cycles that is supposed to turn a piece of aluminum (or delrin) to size, cut two grooves in it and then cut it off. The program looks fine in BobCADs simulator. When I import the g-code into Mach3 I get a message saying "G96 error no S code". When I go back and make sure the CSS option is turned off I get "G97 error no S code". Since I have a Sherline mill with no spindle controls I don't want a G96 or G97 to show up, but if it does why is there no S code? I am not clear is this is a BobCAD issue, an issue with the post-processor or an issue with Mach3. Can you advise? I am also asking BobCAD about this. Thanks, FA.
