Well done...what was the solution?

Do you need a parallel port? If so then no.  There are loads of mini win10 machines around that can run Mach3 but will need an Ethernet or USB external motion controller.

Have you added the plugin to Mach3?  It should be in Mach3\Plugins.  Then open Mach3 and configure it in the contig/config plugins menu.

Oh and you also need to copy across the XML config file from the old machine which sets up all the ports and pins etc.

Win10 should work, I use it with a lathe and mill using M3 043.062.  I assume you're using a usb version of the smooth stepper drives?  Have you verified on their website that the plugin is compatible with win10? Have you got the Mach3 manual?

Yes, well you need to know which pins on the 25-way connector on the BoB go to where and configure Mach3 accordingly.  Without that it will be hard to make any progress.  Where are you located?

Which "Reset" button won't reset - the one on the Mach3 screen?

Grbl is not an alternative to mach3.  Actually it doesn't have a user interface, it's just a motion controller that takes gcode input and turns it into pulses to drive stepper motors.  There are front ends that can drive grbl but so far as I've been able to find nothing that has the functionality of Mach.  And if you're having  trouble getting mach going you won't find grbl easier.

Though I suggest linuxcnc that is probably harder to get going.  I'm fairly sure that it can be downloaded with its own version of Ubuntu,  so no need to have a real time Linux distribution.

No! But suitable low spec PCs that can run Ubuntu can be had for not much.
