Sounds like your IJ setting in Config>General Config is set wrong.  Swap it and try #1 again

Connect your pen solenoid to the Z axis direction pen.  Then a negative Z move ( Z-.001) will lower the pen and a positive move (Z0) will raise it.  We do the same with laser control.

I engraved this yesterday with a development version of my PicEngrave Pro 4 program (of course  ) on Baltic birch plywood with 2 watt laser diode.

I used their controls for many years in industrial control applications to do similar to what you seek.

If you use a cap, typically .1 uf is sufficient.
