Usfwalden,
I am working on a similar machine a bridgeport boss machine. (just look at my thread) I am interested in the 30A8 advance Motion control amplifiers..... are those servo drives?  My tool changer is manually operated by air (pushbutton) the speed control (vari drive) was controlled by air motor with electrical relays. I plan to use a stock manual crank in place of it and control  the speed with a vfd within limits. if I need slower or faster speed window I can then crank it up and down manually. the head has backgear as well.  It looks like the Smooth Stepper and cnc4pc   dedicated breakout board are the trick system as of now.  there seems to be a couple of bugs still but that is the way I am going. it also has a tac feed so we may be able to comfortably tap with a floating tap holder.   as it stands right now I intend to use the larkin Viper servo drives with outboard mounted heatsinks and fans blowing on the inside components. I am not sure that is necessary but that is the way I am going with it.

I have enjoyed your thread. I am surprised I had not stumbled upon it before.

Photo's Current as of april 2008. I am currently working out of town. so it will be a while before I get it up and running.
I have everything picked out. no small task I might add...... Hopefully some of the bugs will be worked out of the smooth stepper/cnc4pc combo before it comes time to turn this thing up

Cheers

Archie,
what type of drives have you got? Has this got a toolchanger and a power drawbar of some sort? Just wondering why you are needing ModBUS if it doesnt.
Hood

Hood,
Unfortunatly No toolchanger Drawbar Is Air operated, the spindle is NMTB30 and the drives I am planning on using are Larken Viper Drives http://www.larkencnc.com/viper/v200.htm
the rest is in the above post.

This Is for this machine   http://jeep534.smugmug.com/gallery/5099973_TQC2C#307649501_owpex
Well here it is. Today's revision of my electronics. all boards from CNC4PC.  I am also planning on re using a transformer I have from another mill to Build a power supply to power the servo's and I am also  going to Build a power supply for the lo voltage stuff and use CNC4PC Regulator Boards where Needed.

Computer Is a 1U rack mount machine.

You'll get there Archie but if you need any help just post on the forum and I am sure someone will be able to help you out if I cant. Everyday I am learning something new and thankfully I seem to be past the stage of letting the magic smoke escape :D

Hood

You better watch that Magic smoke.  A series1 bridgeport CNC servo machine has a lot of STUFF to control I have made a Visio drawing of what I think I want to do but am not real sure of how to impliment it. I am planning to use the Smoothe Stepper and all CNC4PC Boards Including the Modbus and the Pendant. what I am not sure about is which of those boards do I need. there are a bunch of them. there is no real place to pose that kind of question to them.

Original posts snipped!

Thanks for the reply Hood and Scott! I was hoping there would be more opinions and suggestions with all the activity on these groups but maybe I should have posted individual posts instead of one big one.

I have been busy with some other things and will probably have some more specific questions once I get back in the shop.

Thanks
Bill Griffin
as for no more post's/ opinions that is because all the rest of us are mostly crawling and asking the same things as you are.
scott, Hood thanks for the Insight. it answered quite a few questions I have had.
I am still wrestling as to how to set up the electronics on my mill.

Guy's I m working on a Bridgeport R2E4 boss 9 servo machine and I plan to use the larken Viper drives. http://www.larkencnc.com/viper/v200.htm   they also have a support site on the CNC-ZONE   My servo's are DC Brush and 14 amps continious and 165 volts they say they are un conditionally guaranteed so I am going to give them a shot...
