Thanks, that is a really great article.  I think I'll be going the ground ballscrew route.  I wish I could find cheaper ones though.  This machine is really costing a lot of $$$$.

A $500 difference adds up when you need 4 of them, that adds up to some serious cash.  My machine will mainly be cutting wood and sometimes aluminum and brass.  I of course want the best that is necessary.  Below is a link to the base machine frame that I have built.

Thanks for the info Dan13, I didn't know about backlash concerns for larger diameter rolled ballscrews.  I think I will need a larger diameter so ground is probably better.  I notice that lower grades are better too, so from one site they are C7 and cheaper, but the other site is C5 which is more expensive.  That site does do the machining for me though, so maybe the higher price will even out over all.

Thanks for your help.

Hey folks, I'm at the stage where I need to order a set of ballscrews, their endmounts and what not.  I see a couple places have precision ground and others have precision rolled ballscrews.  The rolled variety are much cheaper, is there a disadvantage to this kind?  Here's where I'm looking:

You guidance is appreciated.  I can't wait to finish Milla.

I love the tool setter, but don't see how to interface that with Mach3.  Is there a section in the manual for that?  I'm an idjiot that can't find it;)

congrats on your build.  I'm doing another push getting mine done too.  Keep up the good work.  I'd like to see your first cuts.

Hah, If I was married, there would be no way I could build this thing.  I can't wait to see this thing in action too.  One of these days, I'll have it all done!

Hey folks, just wanted to give you a bit of an update.  This is how my mill (Milla) currently looks.  Yes, that is surrounded by plexiglass.  It's amazing how much more polished a machine looks with plexi around it.  The second picture shows the door and beginnings of the gantry as well as all the rails.  It's getting closer I swear.  Does it usually take everybody like 6 months to build these things, or is it just me?

Sure enough, the VFD is incorrect.  I have to ship it back and get a different one.  This same company lost my order twice before too.  It seems they don't want to be in business.

I gotta tell you the service from HSD sucks.  I had the salesperson choose the VFD I'd need, and looks like he chose wrong.  Worse yet, it came without a manual.  When I asked for the manual, he sent one from  "SIRCO", which it looks like have the same maker, but completely different model numbers.  There was no explanation, argh.  I don't recommend ordering from these guys ever after this.
