General Mach Discussion / controlling metal shavings...
« on: October 28, 2009, 12:33:41 AM »
Hey folks, I had to grind down a couple 8020 parts tonight to slip into my machine, and I got metal shavings everywhere.  They weren't like having dust shavings.  They stick to everything, and are like tiny needles.  What do you guys do to control this, keeping the shavings to a minimum?  Damn, that really blew...

Show"N"Tell ( Your Machines) / Milla Render Complete
« on: October 25, 2009, 10:56:11 PM »
Hey folks, thought I'd show you progress on Milla.  I was getting all my ducks in order with parts.  Then I had to model all those parts, to make any custom plates to connect everything together.  Anything in these renders that is metallic red will be a fabricated plate out of Alluminum.  I'll probably anodize them red too, just to offset the colors a bit.  I took a few snapshots around the model showing detail.  I'm sure it's not the best or most ideal system, but it's what my puny brain could come up with;)

Feeling fragile now, damn that was a lot of work.

Show"N"Tell ( Your Machines) / gears, ballscrews, and setscrews
« on: October 23, 2009, 02:50:52 AM »
Hi folks, I've been a modeling madman getting all my parts in the modeling app so I can get some precise connecting plates fabricated.  IN the process, I was assembling lots of parts together, like ballscrews, end supports, gearing...

This is where I noticed that the gears lock in place using a set screw, only the ballscrews are machined smooth.  There's no flat side for the set screw to lock onto.  Is this customary, we just screw directly onto the round shaft?  Do we drill a detent for the screw?  Do we file down a side?

Forgive my ignorance n this matter, it's not something I do everyday;)

Show"N"Tell ( Your Machines) / spindle connection...
« on: October 01, 2009, 12:38:31 PM »
Hello, I've run into a roadblock, and am wonder if you all can give me some tips or a work around.  I have a B/C drive from Doughty Drive, where a spindle plate is first connected to the spindle via 4 screws on the back of the spindle, then that assembly is bolted on the C drives platter.

Here's a close-up of what I mean...

spindle with plate behind it:

what the C Drive with it's platter looks like:

Now here's my issue, I noticed that HSD had a slightly more powerful spindle at the same weight and cleared it with Doughty Drive to make sure it would work.  Now that I'm at the custom plate building phase, I'm noticing that the spindle is slightly wider than the one in his picture, and this width covers up the access holes to connect the plate to the platter of the C Drive.  Do you guys have any suggestions on how to connect the spindle to the plate otherwise?  I could really use the help here.  This has me really down at the moment.

Show"N"Tell ( Your Machines) / Ballscrews - Ground or Rolled?
« on: September 23, 2009, 01:08:20 AM »
Hey folks, I'm at the stage where I need to order a set of ballscrews, their endmounts and what not.  I see a couple places have precision ground and others have precision rolled ballscrews.  The rolled variety are much cheaper, is there a disadvantage to this kind?  Here's where I'm looking:

You guidance is appreciated.  I can't wait to finish Milla.

Show"N"Tell ( Your Machines) / Milla's coming along nicely
« on: July 08, 2009, 12:32:02 AM »
Hey folks, just wanted to give you a bit of an update.  This is how my mill (Milla) currently looks.  Yes, that is surrounded by plexiglass.  It's amazing how much more polished a machine looks with plexi around it.  The second picture shows the door and beginnings of the gantry as well as all the rails.  It's getting closer I swear.  Does it usually take everybody like 6 months to build these things, or is it just me?

Show"N"Tell ( Your Machines) / single phase vs 3 phase VFD's
« on: July 02, 2009, 11:49:08 PM »
Hey folks, could somebody tell me about single phase vs 3 phase VFD's.  I could swear I had my 220 line hooked up for single phase, but HSD sent me a 3 phase VFD.  Is there something I can do to use this, or do I need to send it back?

Show"N"Tell ( Your Machines) / 5 Axis Frame Building
« on: June 18, 2009, 01:09:49 AM »
Hey folks, thought I'd show some progress with my design.  I've got the frame getting set up which is pretty cool.  The electronics are all done, just getting the frame and mechanics set up.  The rails are ordered (hiwin) and should be in, in about a week.  I'll be ordering ballscrews this weekend.  Next, I'll be machining some custom plates to hold it all together.

Anyway, first image is the my CAD design, then comes the frame in it's somewhat coming glory.

Show"N"Tell ( Your Machines) / motion test on the horizon...
« on: May 25, 2009, 01:37:00 PM »
Hey folks, time to show progress. I've finished with the control box.  I've wired it for 6 axis, even though I'll only have 5 axis for the first year about.  I'm almost ready for a motion test.  I've just got to prepare my PC for that.  I can't wait to see this stuff moving.  The frame parts get delivered next weekend too.

Mach3 under Vista / will Mach3 work under Vista 64 bit yet?
« on: April 09, 2009, 02:45:28 AM »
Hey folks, will Mach 3 work under Vista 64 bit yet?  I've got a couple machines that have Vista 64 bit, that would be a major pain to downgrade, but I will if I have to;).

Anybody have any success in 64 bit?
