General Mach Discussion / Re: help with step/direction vfd lathe spindle

Btw, "this guys method", IIRC I believe Art is the creator of Mach :-)

I read that yesterday and it worked very well for me. I am getting within 75 - 100 rpm of requested with no tach or spindle index. I was having the low voltage output too on 1 of my C6's but I really think that was due to my inept testing in which I probably fried a voltage regulator of some form. Until that issue is solved most of the rest will be useless. You say you run the same thing on your mill? What is the voltage output on that one? I know that Arturo at cnc4pc told me to put "1000" steps per in the spindle tuning box but Art says to use "60". Maybe both ways work but get there by different means? I do know that after I did Art's suggestions and redid step 2 as suggested (a few times) it is very close.

Thanks as always Hood. I woke up this morning remembering that it was in the macro. I was thinking it was a dialog box like in mill. I must have opened every page in Mach last night over 50 times before posting. I remembered what it was about 4am but knew if I went into the garage to fix it, my wife would go nuts. Thanks again.

General Mach Discussion / How do I move my tool change location in Turn?
« on: February 22, 2012, 10:29:27 PM »
I had it all working. I wanted to change some limits to enable soft limits and the like. I originally designated where I wanted the tool change to occur but I cant find that screen now for anything! I have opened every page in Mach or so I thought. It must be late. Let me know, thanks

Art, Thank you so much. This worked well for me with a C6, Smoothstepper, Bardac 1600i and an SEM motor. I was within 100 rpm from 2800-100 rpms. I will go back to make sure I did it correctly.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Cant get motors to calibrate
« on: February 18, 2012, 10:24:09 PM »
I just went and looked up my settings for my Sherline lathe as it still has the stock screws. I was showing 8000 steps per for both axis. Stepper at 200 steps per X 4 turns per inch on the screw X 10X microstepping = 8000 steps per. I am running a G540 or a HCNC pro not the Sherline electronics. Shouldnt be any different.

Shouldnt the steps be 200 per rev? Most steppers are. Stock screws on the Sherline? 1/4-20? I would have thought with 10x microstepping you would be in the 2000 range. How far does it move when you ask for 1". I am pretty sure on the General Config page, the very first dialog box "Lock DRO's to Set Up units" needs to be checked.

Andrea, let see some video. Looks to be a nice machine. Surely more rigid than what I see the reprap/maker machines use.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Lathe Tool Change Macro Installation
« on: February 18, 2012, 08:54:20 PM »
The steps per rev was the issue, set it to 200 and the tool change macro works perfectly! It selects the correct tool each time. I did have to change the "safe" area in the in the macro. I am sure my axis are set up iincorrectly. I originally had to change the motor direction of the toolchangers stepper due to a long stall against the pawl followed by a short forward movement. So I am guessing that during initial start up, select a tool and press enter, if proper tool is not selected, simply rotate the turret til the proper tool is in place, from then on out it is indexed properly (for that run or day). The tool changer has no encoder or switch to identify a specific location/tool (at least that I know of yet). But so far everything is great. So Hood, when you set up your lathe, as you are facing it. Where is your Z 0? at the chuck? Or the opposite end? Are all moves in the positive or negative? (I have mine presently set where the farthest away from the chuck is 0 and moving in positive numbers til reaching the chuck @ 11" of travel). Same with the X, where is 0? With the carriage all the way away from you the operator. Doesnt seem to be a straight answer by searching. I know you have it figured out! Btw I cant thank you enough as always! It was great to make one step forward tonight, I better stop before some smoke comes out.

Hood, you are the man! There are still some issues, most likely in motor tuning and calibration. It does rotate and back up onto a pawl, not necessarily the correct tool yet. It seems to pass the correct tool number but our machines were run by different drives. I also have my A axis set to 360 steps per rev when maybe it should be 200. That might stop the over rotation. I am getting much closer to a crash.
