Well I did a search and came up with what might be the problem? Not sure.

But from what I read, there is a bug that makes Z lose its position when running the 4th axis ? Is this correct?

Hi Todd,

I have a 4th axis attached to my Bridgeport turret mill.
It does not miss a beat with the 4th axis running.
I can machine a X Z and A axis simultanious tool path and Z does not loose position.

My PC was running like a bag of nails till I did the optimisation and the step below had the greatest effect (for me anyway).
...but go through from the start of the doc linked above....

1. Right Click My Computer and select Properties
2. Click Hardware tab.
3. Click Device Manager Button in the middle.
4. Double click "Computer".
5. Right click on Standard ACPI PC and choose Update Driver.
6. Choose "Install the software from a Specific Location (Advanced)"
7. Click Next.
8. Choose "Don't search. I will choose driver to install."
9. Click Next.
10. Choose "Standard PC" from the listing.
11. Click Next.
12. Click OK.

My refit was not as complicated as your lathe with turret and tailstock but may give some ideas.

I kept the brushed servos. The old thyrister drive exchanged for step / dir drives  - the resolvers were replaced with encoders.
Any of the control gear / contactors / breakers etc were re-used too.

I wouldn't exchange to steppers, as you would need new motors and drives - I think you would be better off keeping the servos already fitted and go for new drives.
Much of the wiring "should be" back to the panel already.
Some photos of your lathe would be great.

I "roll the cutter" around external corners, it's softer on the mechanics and better accuracy when in CV mode.

The M6T0101 is a tool change call for a lathe not a mill.

The tool numbering stratergy will have to be well controlled if you use multiple tools with the same tool number but different offset numbers.
I dont think I would do it that way, as it's an accident waiting to happen, and for me I'd not have to wait long :-)

Maybe better set up the auto tool length measuring macro - at the start of your job, put in the tools for that particular job, let the machine measure the TLO's and then run the job.

Thanks Derek, i have the tool offsets stored and the g43 seems to work. The second tool offset is the multiple offsets on each tool position (m6 t0101) (m6 t0102), i take it you call them with the h1, h2, h3 ect.

I think I see - you are using a lathe :-) I'm only the "milling department" so better hand you over to a lathe expert as i'd be more guessing than giving info based on experience.

As I understand though, each turret position can have multiple tools, so the T6 tool change calls the turret position then the tool and offset are then applied for the particular tool in use.
