Hi Rich,

I think it is this book, I'll ask my Dad to see if he can find the book and I'll photo the front cover.
Most sites show no photo of the front cover.
Amazon have reference to it......

by L.C. Mason (Author)

One site says it was published in 1980 which sounds about right.

I'm going round to see him later, I'll program the brain cell now but being volatile memory it might be blank by the time I go round ;D
(In fact I'll ring him now and ask.... but his memory is more volatile than mine so no guarantees :D :D )

Amazing,

My Dad built one about 25 yrs ago and still has it in his garage.
The lathe is a design available from a book which details the construction and I remember making a 0-1 morse taper adaptor for it when I was an apprentice.

If my brain cell can remember, I'll take a pickie and post it here.

At last it is not ome of a kind but has a familiy member ;D

Driving the knee is a waste of time, rapids far too slow, much better to spend £15k on a proper VMC ::)

(My BP with a 8Nm stepper driven knee conversion works fine, it won't win any speed competitions (neither will my car), but does juuuust fine).
When it does eventualy wear out I will buy another mill, pick the best bits from both machines and rebuild, but by then "star trek replicators will be available and I'll go from CAD to part without all the messy swarf. ;)

Hi Hood,

I like the look of the Pokeys as it appears to be an "all in one" for just about all my add-on needs and was hoping that it would O/p to the VFD to make a realy neat installation.

If not, the Pokey is still looks good and I'll fit a digispeed / other for the spindle speed control.
I did make a PWM to volt converter for my BP driven by the op from the PMDX but it hunts a bit so I will change this at the same time as fitting to the Orac.

Hi All,

I've acquired a nice little Orac with a tool changer and are going to convert it to Mach 3.
I have already converted a Bridgeport to M3 but this is a basic system with just 1 standard breakout board+ shuttle.

Looking at the i/o extension options for Orac, the Pokeys looks great as I would like to :-

Operate the tool change (3 position sensor  i/p and 1 o/p to index).
Fit MPG handwheels to give "manual machining control"
Travel limits
Speed and spindle speed override pots.......so far so good I think 8)
Also, op a 0-10v analogue signal to a new VFD for spindle control, I'm not sure if Pokeys does this yet? I (think) I will need to somehow isolate the analogue from the VFD?

Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

I keep most of my "scrappers", now I'm thinking of investing in a bigger "scrapper box" its getting quite full.
Still, its fun to go through the box once in a while to remind myself of where I went wrong in the past.

Does that qualify me for OMS membership ;D

Hi Richard,

I use a plunger type DTI for setting the tools.
It has a small flat face that the tools can be brought up against, the plunger points upwards---- there is a thread on the forum somewhere by the person who originally posted the idea.
It saves chipping a tool if you come down too hard and you don't need to have a hand sliding the block (or feeler gauge) to detect when the tool touches.

So what I do is load tool 0, bring down on the DTI to the zero mark, then zero the z axis.
Then for tool 1 select tool 1 in the offsets page, (bottom right corner) bring down on the DTI and click the "set tool offset button" just under where is says Gauge block height. This automatically loads the length into the tool table.
Make sure your gauge block value is set to 0.000
Do that for all your tools. (I use the shuttle pro which speeds up the process no end)

In the code put :-

T1 M06
G43 L1

(call tool 2 by)

T2 M06
G43 L2

etc
