Adprinter, I forgot about the comment on the MDF. Yes, I was surprised how well it stood up to the heat. It was a Lead Alloy that melts at about 550F, I take it to about 600F to pour. It barely scorched the MDF, I think I could have cast a few more without trouble. If it had failed, I was going to try to cast it with Bismuth. It still has to be about 550F to cast. I wish I could afford some Woods Metal. I just don't have any Cadmium. Woods Metal melts at about 160F, that would be pretty neat to try.
I have had a few failures, metal shooting out between the flask, melted through what I thought was a thin steel plate, turned out to be Tin. That was fun, molten Aluminum everywhere. I want some petrobond for brass, it likes to spit and pop out of greensand. Glad I have good PPE.

Rich, that sounds like a good approach to a casting like that. I really like Pewter and have collected a few pounds of it at auctions and flea markets. Problem is, I don't always know what I have. I'm pretty sure it all Lead free from looking up manufacturers online and sticking with newer castings. I also bout a bar of pewter from a metal supplier. I got some Nickel too, I hope to make some Monel sometime but would have to build a tougher furnace.

My greensand is made with Kitty Litter also, I ground mine in an old blender. I heard of guys just soaking the litter in water until it breaks down to mud, then dry it out some and add sand. I haven't tried that yet. I think my mix is about 10% clay to 90% fine sand. I've been going to add coal dust because it gives a better finish.
Everything stopped last year when I was downsized at work and then went on disability due to some health issues. Then we moved twice and I've ended up in Southern Tennessee. I didn't have a garage or any storage space so I put all my toys in a storage locker.
Well now my garage is finished and I just got out of the hospital...Again! Now, as soon as I'm allowed by the warden (aka wife) :), I'll get my CNC and all my casting stuff out of limbo and start doing something again.
I've cast Lead, Aluminum, Brass, and some Cast Iron. Hope to smelt some Iron this year, from ore I've collected. Casting is my primary hobby, I built the CNC to make some patterns for casting signs and gears and such. Can't wait to get back at it.

The wizard works very well. I had a little problem with it cutting deeper than I wanted, I can't remember what I had to do to fix it.

Thanks, just realized I can't spell and don't see anyway to edit. ::)  I went to college just can't spell it.

I've wondered about what seems to be many copyright infringements on here and many other websites. I imagine the hammer will drop sometime. Once they get the internet tax through, they have the money to go after lawbreakers.

Anyone have code for collage logos? I have OSU and am looking for Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, SC, and any or all the SEC and Big 10. I know there's copyright laws but it's OK if you don't sell them, right?
We've moved to Tenn and my CNC is in storage for a couple months. I'm still working on my G-code, dxf Library. Keeps me from going totally nuts with my stuff!!  :P ::)

Pretty close, we were looking around the Cleveland area and Louden. We've kind of settled on western Chattanooga. I was checking into some Iron Foundries in the area but I've had some health problems so I think I'm on early retirement. More time for CNC and Casting, both kinds, casting metals and Lures. :)

Wow, that should keep me busy for a while, Need to take the laptop to the "Throne Room". I had started setting up an engraving table to cut some printing plates...Not For Dollar bills! Still may try that some time, but I need a mill of some kind to make perfectly flat blanks. I've got too many hobbies.

I may be away for a while, we are going into Move mode. Sold our house and need to find a place...soon. I had just decided to settle in for winter, now I've got to get out before winter sets in. I'll let you know where we end up. Hopefully Chattanooga area, a little warmer and some good fishing.
Everyone be safe, I'll be around.

I've been following his stuff for a few months, he has a pretty large gallery of things he's done. That is some beautiful engravings. I don't think I have the patience or that my neck could handle bending over the bench.

Well, I found out yesterday that I can't melt copper in my electric furnace. Probably isn't a good idea to melt brass in it. I got the copper up to 1800F and the elements broke. When I checked it and the whole element crumbled to little pieces. I'll rewire it and then keep it below 1250F for aluminum and pewter.
I'll have to get the propane furnace out and finish this melt.
I started a melt with 90% copper, 10% tin, and a small amount of copper/phos rod to alleviate gas issues. I had the water bath all set up, too. Maybe next week.
