You can get Kollmogan drives on eBay at good price when they come around,they can be programmed to run most motors even with resolver feedback.  They come in all sizes.

Maybe you should try the new dynomotion controller with the Mach plugin;

What microstep do you have it set to?   Going to 32v will for sure increase the speed.

You can get a lot of RPM but it all depends on how much load you will accel and deccel and how fast.   What is your machine setup?

What size is the motor on your lathe?  It might be slowing down when you start cutting and mach doesn't correct in time.  Do you have tachometer on the spindle to make sure the speed is constant?

Any one know what is the max reliable number of pulses per second through the parallel port for reading a encoder to have it show position in the Setting Tab (encoder DRO)?
