General Mach Discussion / Re: resolver to digital
« on: March 30, 2008, 11:57:04 PM »
I have been keeping an eye out in the hobby community of any news of some one using dual feed back to a cnc controller ie rotary and linear encoders and have not seen any.   I think the most practical solution is rotary encoders on the motors for the cnc controller and if you want to add linear scales as a DRO to verify positioning you can do that.

Here is a controller that will handle resolvers with Mach3:

Look under videos.

So you want to use linear encoders instead of rotary encoders on the motors?  Right now you have resolvers on the motors that feed into the Galil?

What is the linear encoder for?

I say take the money for the control!  You can't use tachs or resolvers you will need encoders if you plan on using servos.  As for the PLC ise one of these: http://cubloc.com/product/01_01.php,   very easy to program and cheap.

Interesting how things work out.

Scott, what does a machine like that cost at the store?

Amen, Scott:

I wounder who he will be calling when lightning kills something.

I think the only reason they put 60v if it is actually 60v is to keep the feed speed controllable,  by my estimate at 60v the motors will give you ~190ipm rapid.
It this case you will need a higher count encoders at least 1000 cpr.  Because the 500 cpr will give you .0004 between counts.

Have you read this thread about the g100:

Are the servos direct driving the screws?  I don't think the Geckos will push those motors fast enough to your liking you need some bigger drives like the Vipers from Larken Automation.

Are you using the g100 mostly for extra inputs?  I think of these will be much better: http://cubloc.com/product/01_01.php
very easy to use through serial ModBus in Mach3.

Modbus / Re: Using a modbus input in ports & pins

I think the only way to do that is with a brain or maybe a VB script also.  But the brain is simpler here is a picture of what you need to do:

Add a ModBus input then a No-Operation lobe and terminate to a Mach3 X limit input.

If you have not used brains before watch the videos on the help page if you need more help just ask.

Compared to haas it will not cost that much to retrofit and is very doable.  Here are videos of a person that did the same thing you want:
